Tell me a story

Something that always fascinated me about humans is their love for stories. We love to hear a good story, and whenever we meet someone who's a good storyteller, we usually like that person a lot more than we like other people.

That's not always the case, of course, but it shows how important storytelling is to us, and how the people who learn how to tell a good story can get far using only that skill.

And it is a skill, despite what other people may think. Sure, some have a natural ability to tell stories a lot better than others, but even those who can't naturally do it can learn how to.

Anyway, because of how people react to stories, it would seem obvious that most authors would learn how to tell good stories in order to enhance their writing, to get more attention and to make their work a lot more interesting. It doesn't matter if we're talking about writing books or about writing articles. The important thing here is that people should integrate stories into their work in order to make it more interesting.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case. A lot of people actually choose to ignore storytelling when it comes to their articles and they instead focus mainly on sharing information, without caring how they do it.

That's why you see a lot of "how to" articles online, or articles that simply give you a list of things you should do, know or acknowledge.

While those articles can be useful, and they are in a lot of situations, it's not always what people want to read. People search for those articles when they need to learn something new or when they need a specific type of information not when they want to have fun reading.

The reason for that is that "how to" articles are often boring. Authors don't tell a story when writing those articles, and they just focus on sharing information they consider to be useful.

That's why people who want to read something while they're relaxing choose to read articles or books that tell a story, articles or books that don't begin with a title similar to "how to" or "why these type of people are successful". People are looking for a story, and more authors should learn how to write while keeping that in mind.

It doesn't mean all authors should only write stories, or that they should implement stories in all their articles, not at all. Some works need to be purely about sharing information or explaining certain concepts.

However, one thing is for sure, and that's that if you learn how to tell stories, and if you integrate that skill into your articles, you'll probably receive a lot more attention from people than before, simply because they will be more interested in what you have to say.
