The third rune of the Elder Futhark is Thurisaz (Thurs, Thorn, Thauris).

This rune is dedicated to the god of thunder Thor. Thor is the main defender of Asgard and Midgard, the world of gods and people, from Frost giants, Jotunns and Trolls who inhabit Jotunheim. Jotunns are the embodiment of natural forces: they are spontaneous and uncontrollable, but, nevertheless, they are very strong. Almost all the inhabitants of Jotunheim are aggressively against the people and the gods, they send all kinds of bad weather, hail, snow, storms and snow avalanches to the world. The world is protected from them by Mjöllnir, the Thor hammer. Thus, Thurisaz is the hammer of Thor, by which he beats giants. If we look at the rune's image, we'll see that it looks like a hammer. This is a mighty, but very heavy rune, which is difficult to understand.

Anton Platov, a well-known researcher of the runes and the Northern Tradition, says about this rune that it has three aspects, the most obvious of which is the following of the most common name - thurs that means the giant. Thurs was associated to be in opposition to the gods, but initially they were understood as an incredibly ancient generation of "prehistoric" gods, gods of the "older generation". In this respect, the thurs are similar to the ancient titans .The main characteristic of the thurs is their power and we see thus from the meaning of this rune. This power later became the "attribute" of one of the gods of the "second" generation, Thor, which is associated with the second aspect of the rune - its form repeats the form of the stylized image of the Thor hammer - Mjöllnir. Finally, the third aspect relates to the Gothic "the Gate".

Thurisaz is an ordering force that subordinates destructive and hostile forces, setting a framework for them. Thor acts not by the power of reason or will, but applies direct physical influence to establish the world order - destroying those who risked crossing the boundaries established by the gods.

Thor repeatedly violates the promises made to the giants and breaks the agreements concluded with them unilaterally, without being embarrassed by the exact fulfillment of the contract by the other party. But, despite the apparent injustice of this kind of actions - it is in him the salvation of Asgard and Midgard, and the unjust and treacherous, at first glance, actions of the Torah are rightful. He simply does not allow anyone and anything to prevent him from maintaining the world order. Thor sees the very essence of events, and if it is wrong - he does not hesitate to violate any convention.

Thurisaz is similar to this. Even promising something, it will break the promise if it considers that the agreement runs counter to a certain higher goal. Remember this when you apply or use it.

Thurisaz is one of the main protection runes. Very masculine and aggressive, it also often talks about someone's protection/patronage (or the desirability of such patronage).

Direct Thurisaz means some indomitable force that depends little on you, and acts according to the laws of its internal logic, which can only be obeyed, but it is almost impossible to influence or subordinate it to its goals. Usually its purpose is quite worthy as a whole, but it can quite drastically differ from your desires. However, in the event that your goals coincide, Thurisaz will also take all the dirty work (such as violation of contracts) with you in the same unconditional way. It can not be otherwise, this is the whole essence of it.

Inverted Thurisaz means a complex or untimely test, a breach of obligations, a breach of contract. Mjöllnir turns against you - perhaps the only way to avoid its attack is to get out of the situation, not hoping for the justice of the other party and the agreements. But you need to do this very carefully, so as not to get out of the fire and into the bigger fire. It also means difficult period, self-aggression.

Background Thurisaz "in the future" means an increase in aggression, conflict, and environmental competitiveness.

Background Thurisaz "in the past" means a decline in aggression, conflict, and environmental competitiveness.

Hidden Thurisaz. You or someone next to you are experiencing, even if this seems unobvious or unrelated to the current question. Possible violation of contracts, perfidy. Be careful.

Thurisaz in the base. Thurisaz, serving as a base for some other rune, provides it with full and unconditional support, destroying any opposition from outside. This situation is almost impossible to change: Thor hammer never turns against gods, whatever happens. One of the few unconditionally favorable position of this rune.
