I have recently read some romance novels - both of the 80s and 90s and then a new release... I was really disappointed with the new one in that the author had several interesting mystery-level threads that she introduced, but ran out of time to deal with them and simply ended the book! Very disappointing! But you will get your mysteries... just not yet.
