Fat-Shaming and a Higher Standard

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

Most reasonable people would agree that making fun of people for things they cannot control, is shitty and mean. But if, as Pietro Aretin said, “A single satire will sometimes effect more good than a hundred sermons,” is it not OK to sometimes make fun of people for negative qualities they CAN control. If a person is told for 100 consecutive days that the hat they wear is ugly, they will either stop wearing the hat, or become so resolute in their own personal style that the hat will become a part of their being. By that same logic, if you make fun of a person for being fat, the same could be true. They might either decide to take steps to change their situation or become so resolved to their lot, that they are hardened into a stronger person (and even become a famous comedian.)

Or is their blood on your hands if they kill themselves?

So, is it good to shame people for the things they can control? Should you just mind your own business as the standards around you drop? Where is the line?

Obesity is a real problem. Obese people have twice the chance of getting cancer, heart disease, etc.

  1. You can control weight by cutting calories and exercising...
  2. Telling friends to lose weight when they are overweight is a good thing since it's going to probably add quite a few years to their lives.
  3. The only people who complain of fat shaming are women...no guys ever complained of being "fat shamed"...their interpretation is most likely going to be: "yeah, someone told me I should get off my butt and do something with my weight problem"...which is true.

Valid point about the difference in how men and women perceive being told they have a weight problem. But, whose fault is that?

I guess I've poked fun at my friends for gaining weight, and I believe it helps reaffirm their goals to drop those extra pounds. Most people IMHO just need their circle of influence to be honest about their state of health.

Ultimately it varies by individual, some take it to heart, some actually decide to do something about it.

If you want fat people to get a healthier lifestyle there are dozens of better options than hurting their feelings, like... simply telling them to change their lifestyle for their own good you know?

Also telling people for 100 consecutive days you don't like the way they are or they look is a borderline case of psychological harassment.

Fat-Shaming and a Higher Standard verry nice post big thumbs up have a nice day.@adi50

we should not be prejudiced against anyone. We take on the positive side only. Your story is interesting

I think we should say the negative things we observe without offending or shaming anyone. We should say it in a way they will be inspired to be a better person.

when fat is synonymous with disease, not necessarily that skinny was also healthy, hehehehe

I think that someone is sincerely concerned about someone else’s weight , there is a nice way to go about it . In a manner that is encouraging. Fat shaming them is a cruel way to go about it.
