Why Is Nobody Talking About This: Belly Buttons

There is this ridiculous fleshy knot in the middle of our stomach’s, and literally nobody is talking about them.  According to Wikipedia, “The navel (clinically known as the umbilicus, colloquially known as the belly button, or tummy button) is a hollowed or sometimes raised area on the abdomen at the attachment site of the umbilical cord. All placental mammals have a navel.”[1]

But what is the belly button really about? Why when you dig your finger inside of it, does it feel like you’re touching nerves that are connected all over, and more importantly MUCH deeper inside of you?

It probably has to do with the fact that for the 9 months you were in the womb, ALL of your nutrition was supplied by your mother, through the umbilical cord, and into your body. It only makes sense that this super highway of chemicals would have easy access to the far reaches of your body.

Another odd fact about the belly button is that for almost all of human history, we’ve required it to be hidden. The taboo of revealing your mid-section has always been around, and even still today, for women to show this part of their body in public can be viewed as scandalous or even criminal.

We may never truly understand the belly button, but one thing is for sure, a cute naval piercing on a 22 year old girl is great. On a 75 year old man, it’s just not.
