I view machine learning as more like an advance statistical analysis of variance operation designed to maximize some particular output. As such there is no real intelligence per say.
For now that it surely true. But what if we develop a "strong AI"?
Strong AI might result in something like Ray Kurzweil's technological singularity. All bets are off at that point. Who knows if such things will happen though based on the state of the world as it presently is.
