... Queensland and our hearts go out particularly to those effected by the devastation in North Western part of the state. Satellite images show that over 13 million hectares literally went underwater (that’s 33 million acres or 130,000 sq km). To put this in perspective for those in the Northern Hemisphere it is an area the size of Austria and Switzerland combined, or the entire state of Mississippi in the US. For those in the South this is larger than the whole North Island of New Zealand, or almost twice the size of the state of Tasmania. After a long extended drought some parts of Queensland received a crazy three years’ worth of average rainfall in a week. The flood is starting to look historical in proportions even for a land that is used to extreme flooding with some suggestions it has exceeded a 1/100 year event. While not receiving as much media attention as the flooding in the north eastern part of the state due to its much lower population density, the devastation in the north west has been total for a lot of cattle station owners with estimates as high as up to 500,000 cattle killed along with countless wildlife.
