Stellular - Vega and Altair

The seventh day of the seventh month marks the beginning of the annual event of the Tanabata - meaning "Evening of the seventh". Tanabata is a Japanese seasonal festival, to celebrate the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi.

The legend recount Princess Orihime (representing star Vega) and Hikoboshi (representing star Altair) wish of eternal love.

She was the daughter of Sky King, and Hikoboshi was a cow herder, they fell in love and blinded by love became oblivious to their responsibility towards the court.

The King was not pleased about their lack of concern towards their duties, he began to obstruct their love to the point of separating them, casting each on separate side of the river (the Milky Way).

Once a year, for one day,
a bridge of Magpies forms over the river to allow the lovers to be together.

Over the years I have found variation of the legend, some recount of a mother Queen of the Universe separating them because love between an heavenly creature and human was forbidden.

On this day, people write wishes on strips of paper called Tanzaku and hung them from bamboo stalks.

The festivities end by entrusting your wish (strip of paper) to the river, the wishes are carried on to Orihime and Hikoboshi.

What did you wish for?

I always loved this artwork, that's why I chose it to represent one of my songs (thank you for allowing me to) but I didn't know the full story behind it...
Now, I like it even more !!! :-)

Thank You @lastravage.
I am glad you like it and you're Welcome.

Beautiful art and beautiful story, @lady-idra

You are correct. This theme is depicted in many other legends and myths all over the globe.

Thanks for the solid post.

Interesting to see some Japanese stories. Are you Japanese?

What is their belief in regards to numerology? As i'm seeing it's mentioned no 7 as if it's some kind of synchronicity of sorts. And it's a shame to see that selfish deeds like serving someone, were more of concern before human values such as love and compassion even in the older times. Otherwise i find it of interest this post :^.

7 is a universal sacred number :- 7 seas - 7 days of the week - 7 colors of the spectrum - 7 virtues etc.
A high percenteage of Japanese are Buddhist and they believe in seven reincarnations, they celebrate the birth of a new baby a week after his/her birth. Same for one's death, funeral held on seventh day and memorial on seventh week following death.
Also, the practice of "entrusting" to water is a Buddhist and Shintoist practice, all about spiritualism, achestry and water been a good carrier to/for the souls.

I am sorry Vega and Alteir's myth was not completely to your taste. It's a myth with an umbilical cord to reality, I understand your feeling but power prevail sentiments, especially for people on power! a woman's life was worth nothing and if she was born to a 3rd or 4th wife, was worth even less ... It's a myth, but we cannot change history.

No @teetee I am not Japanese.
Thank You for stopping by, for your comment and interest.
Have a good day.

Uh sounds interesting. Is it only 7 important, or are there any other numbers as well ? I'm asking you as i use to find no 33 somewhat mystic i was quite fond of it, but i dont know whether it has some meaning or not.

Yes, i am interested in reading and finding new stuff hihi, is part of my learning curve.
Hope to see more of your articles soon :^. Have a lovely day meanwhile

Seems like a very calm and soothing festival just to replenish ones soul and faith.
