Fine Art Auction: Mary Borgstrom

in #art5 years ago (edited)

As is often the case, when an accomplished Artist dies the value of their art increases.

Supply and demand.

When a recognized Artist is no longer producing or creating their art, in their style, the supply becomes limited. This drives perceived value and sets a price precedent upon the first sale. That “precedent” will then be used to put a value on any piece of the Artist’s art that sells in the future.

The enjoyment of fine art is personal.

Beauty really is, in the eye of the beholder.

In this video, you will see numerous pieces of fine art that was salvaged from Mary Borgstrom’s house.

Please keep in mind that Mary specialized in primitive ceramics and pottery.

This Lady, travelled all over North America to forage for her own clay; exactly the way that our Indigenous peoples did.

She never bought clay. She dug it out of the earth with her own hands.

She also never used a commercial kiln, instead chose to build her own fires outside and fire her pieces in the traditional ways of our ancestors.

Mary also hand rubbed her pieces to produce a more natural matte glaze and she made her own recipes (out of organic materials) to add colour to her art.

As a result, you can see just how much she was influenced and inspired by nature in the pieces that she crafted.

It is remarkable to think that she made all these items with materials that she extracted from the earth, pulled from her imagination, formed with her bare hands and set with fire.

About 3 weeks ago (before Mary died) a single, small piece of her art sold at auction for just over $2000 Canadian dollars.

These pieces will be auctioned off on April 15th, 2019.

Curiosity Incorporated has decided to split the proceeds from the auction 50/50 with Mary’s estate and family. They also decided to donate some pieces (including Mary’s pottery wheel) to a local museum in the town where Mary was from.

You can view the collection in the video.

I liked her art, really original things. Thank you for sharing @rebeccaryan

Thanks for caring @magnata.
Art is culture and a representation of what civilization was like in any given time period.
Worth sharing, worth recording. ;)

That's a beautiful collection! I am especially fond of the burnished pieces. Wow, what a story she had to tell. It's kinda sad that to think that this is the last time the collection will be seen as a unit. After the auction it will be scattered, but so many people will be enjoying her art for many, many years to come <3

Thanks for that @tamaralovelace. I know that it seems like I have become fixated on this story... I do have a few emotional attachments because of the research time that I spent (putting the nomination together) and in working with the people that I have crossed paths with as a result. (Including one of Mary’s Granddaughters).
I wanted to include the collection piece on Steemit so that it will be preserved (in its entirety) on a blockchain. You’re right, after the auction the entire collection will be parted out. ;)

I would like to think this is not the end of her story :) Perhaps at some point a diehard collector will spend time and wealth reassembling these very pieces! The blockchain is a perfect place to preserve a digital copy...so many things this blockchain of ours is good for.

In general, about the auction here you can find a good option https://autoauctionhistory.com/ Which I like. This is not my first time using this site. It is very, very good and extremely convenient, so I recommend that you try it yourself, I think you will also like it as a whole and me, but see for yourself
