What's happening?

At the far edge of Scorpio Mercury met in a conjunction with Jupiter. All by itself this union suggests a time of new learning, expanding your mind and intellectual horizons. It encourages higher education on some fairly sophisticated topics which I'll discuss in a moment, but coming in the sign of mysterious Scorpio, it may show a time when you finally dig out some answers on a situation that has puzzled or troubled you.

It may show that you see some situation (or person) more clearly than ever -- and that truth may be important, because some of the facts may have been carefully concealed until now. Mercury / Jupiter in Scorpio is a time of reading between the lines (and seeing beneath surface appearances) with uncommon clarity.

It can also show a time when you finally admit the truth to yourself on something you've tried to avoid, or gloss over, or rationalize. Oddly though -- considering all the care you put into propping up a false image -- or keeping yourself in the dark and "undecided" -- this honesty may be a relief. You can accept your conclusions and move on -- to other projects, or different decisions, or at least keep your involvement here more informed than in the past.

This is what it looks like to an Astrologer.

Optimism, happiness, good news

On its own, Mercury conjunct to Jupiter brings a time of conspicuous optimism, excitement, good news and a generally happy outlook on life. The new opportunities and interests that arrive are so numerous and so intriguing you'll feel you've reached an important breakthrough and finally made it past some obstacles that kept you from seeing things clearly ... or making good choices.

Your natural joy of learning has a feast of new material to consider -- and absorb. You may read more, talk more or formally study subjects that really hold your attention.

Open-minded, generous, confident

Mercury conjunct Jupiter helps you feel open-minded and generous -- and engaged with life in ways that may have been missing lately. It's a good time to expand your world through travel -- and learning about different cultures, different people, different parts of the world -- if that has any appeal.

Your confidence is high. So is your positive thinking. Projects you start now have a head start on success -- and of becoming a real statement of who you are, what you believe, what you consider to be your value to the community. You may feel you can accomplish pretty much anything you put your mind to -- and with both Mercury and Jupiter moving in to Sagittarius in a matter of days -- you're almost certainly right.

Serious stuff

I said earlier that this combination encourages you to explore higher learning topics -- such as law, social norms, morality, philosophy, ethics, religion, foreign cultures, teaching-and-learning, higher education, anything that involves the progress and betterment of humanity, writing and publishing, matters of fairness and justice, integrating outside ideas into life in ways that really work for you.

I know that's a long and imposing list -- and no, I don't expect you to dive straight into those depths. But anything you take up now in the way of reading or study -- or just general thinking -- with touch on these areas now in ways that show the complexity in even common thought -- if you work with them carefully.

A gift from the Cosmos to you

You may be full of ideas that have more depth than you realize -- so again, take notes, listen, and hear what your Inner Philosopher is trying to tell you.

You're well set up at the moment to see life's Big Picture perspective -- and there is no better place from which to get a good grip on your future. Don't waste this one -- because that future, you know, is coming up fast!!

This lasts about 10 days or so ... so keep track of what all I mentioned. You'll see lots of ways they apply to life now.

Meanwhile, if you've never seen your horoscope ... and don't have a clue how to work with it, maybe it's time to find out. There are lots of "chart services" on the internet -- some of whom produce decent, readable charts "for free" and some are so awful and confusing that even I can't read them easily -- and I've worked with charts for decades.

One extremely user-friendly chart site is here: AstroLabe. I recommend them if you want a simple, easy-to-read chart. I think they even give a reasonable little interpretive reading of your horoscope as part of the package. You'll need to know your birth information -- day, month, year, time and geographical place. Without all that your chart will have limited accuracy.

Although sometimes the background pictures in our visual essays support the topic and text, they don't always. Sometimes the connection is clear. Sometimes it's symbolic and subtle. Sometimes, there's no connection at all.

The scenes depict landscapes and natural features, buildings and wildlife. They were chosen because they show something lovely or interesting ... or simply because the photo appealed to me.

Our spectacular and remarkable planet is changing at astonishing speed. Rarely are these changes for the better. Few people seem to know ... or care ... or have the will and power to do anything about this. It may not be long before the world humans have known and lived in for centuries is forever lost. We certainly won't be able to make repairs as fast as we destroyed it.

So a few years ago I began collecting pictures of the way things were ... and still are for now, a record of the beauty we have while it is still ours to love and honor.

The photos here are part of that collection, with sincere thanks to the artists who saw these moments ... and with their cameras ... preserved them.
