We (Bitcoin / Open Cryptos) Do Not Need / Want - Institutional Money

in #blockchain6 years ago (edited)

We often hear that what cryptocurrency really needs is "Institutional Money" and the blessings of large established organizations such as central banks to be invested. Only then we can start to see sustained long term growth in the industry.

So let us see if this is consistent with actual observation especially from the more recent historical progress in related technology; namely the Internet itself.

While computer networkingis no recent phenomenon, it is only with the growth of the Internet has it given a quantum leap in human progress. The simple reason why none of the computing giants were able to create the Internet was simply because of greed. While corporations had the human resources and skills and financial means to add to the progress of the Internet, they neither initiated nor this they contribute in any substantial manner.

It was government that kick-started the Internet with it's predecessor called the ARPANet in 1969 and that was subsequently developed by individuals and academia in an open source, non-profit manner. Meanwhile the large corporations created parallel competing networks with the idea of eventually creating the first global network which they would fully own and control. In fact, as the IP protocol (Internet Protocol) got better, most large organizations would attempt to copy it's tech and to a large extent try to emulate the services without giving due credit to it's creators.

Some notable competitors of these networks which eventually failed are:

  1. DECNet by DEC,... a early giant in the industry.
  2. IBM VNET by IBM.
  3. MS-Net by Microsoft which started from networking PCs.
  4. ISO OSI X.25 by international organization ITU which never really became big.

Many of these networks are either dead or still dying and are basically just footnotes in history books. It is important to remember though that these companies did continuously try to dominate the Internet and only really started to use it in the 1990s when they realized that there was quick money to be made. Every dollar put into developing the Internet was insignificant in development value, late, and made with the intention to extract much more profit out.

Today we see the same phenomenon happening with blockchain technology. The first globally successful cryptocurrency and related blockchain tech is bitcoin which was created in 2009. Now 10 years on, we see the large companies copying it's tech, manipulating it's price and simultaneously bad-mouthing it in the press.

Once again the open source, unregulated tech is slowly being developed and much like development the IP (Internet Protocol), large organizations will tell you that they have a version that is better, faster, more secure, cheaper when in fact it is the opposite. As a fact, bitcoin is not maintained by a singled centralized organization, yet is being continuously tested and being used since 2009 without a shutdown. It still carries the most value and has never been successfully hacked. Make no mistake about it, this is trial by fire.

Meanwhile, the large organizations attempt to create their own versions in the form of Ripple and similar crypto which are centralized, controlled, non-open sourced. Meanwhile, large banks are attempting to manipulate the prices of bitcoin and create derivatives of it to make money without thought of using the tech to improve lives. Governments do not do much better with restrictions on exchanges and sales of open source crypto.

It is especially obvious that when corporations are involved, the main criteria is focus will always be short term profit, not the long or even medium term improvement of human society. Any minor improvements added will merely be for the sole excuse of milking the network for more profits.

To that the response should not be to fight back directly against these large entities. Rather, one should attempt to educate themselves and others while avoiding any conflict with large institutions. Humanity is on the verge of the largest breakthroughs ever which may actually provide the foundations to end human poverty. We do not have time to banter with these organizations.

To large institutions who attempt to dangle a carrot with the intent of someday controlling bitcoin and open crypto: We do not want you and we do not need your money. Watch us while we progress forward and leave you in the dust.
