Boulder Sunday in Barbados

in #bouldersunday5 years ago (edited)

On the island of Barbados, there is a place called Bathsheba, where there are boulders on the beach, making way for a place of beauty. Such distinctive rock formations, some taking on the appearance of a mushroom, with the tide ebbing and flowing - the surf beating the rock away.

This is my entry for #BoulderSunday hosted by @Shasta. Show me your biggest and best boulders!

For those interested in geology, the Scotland district in Barbados contains thirty (30) to fifty (50) million years old rocks - clay stones, sand and siltstones, volcanic ash layers, chalk, and radiolarite, as well as some odd rock formations such as mineral concretions that resemble huge cannon balls. Bathsheba therefore not only offers visitors to Barbados unique sea, beach, sky and flora photo opportunities but also views of Bathsheba Rock, the imposing offshore boulder that rises from the Atlantic Ocean.

Bathsheba is on the rugged East Coast of Barbados and is also the main fishing village on the island. Being on the Atlantic side of the island, where those rolling waves that are so prevalent, make Bathsheba Beach one of Barbados's best surfing locations.

Effortless in nature, simple beauty just takes my breath away

The myth falls away, finally... finally... and we see deeper, beneath the surface of everyday attention, and we get a glimpse of unseen beauty and wonder that seems to expand our consciousness. Those moments can be so full that they seem self-authenticating.

A flower. There must always be a flower to color my world.

image.png

I always thought of myself as a little spontaneous, but I can see that I really am a creature of habit. More often than not, this creature of habit drinks a full glass of water when I get up and then go downstairs and make Dunkin Donuts coffee, whole bean, with a little half and half…. It used to be a cup of Chai tea with a couple of cinnamon sticks and a whole clove. Every morning, using identical proportions. While the coffee is going, I go out to the mailbox, where there is an accompanying box underneath and retrieve the Washington Post. I save the Times for later. There are a sweet comfort and an unquestionably reassuring sameness to it. These small things give my life continuity from one day to the next. The ordinary rituals are comforting, but sometimes there is longing for change, to go in a different direction, or maybe just to grow outside your own box.

Don't ever forget what wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
Ran my fingers across the whole world
And whispered,
"Where does it hurt?"
It answered,

"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"

Those boulders just go to prove that there used to be giants on Earth one day. That's the only explanation! They used to go there and fight there battles like back in the Colosseum in Rome. A 1 on 1 fight to the death throwing those boulders at each other.

Oh, my!! I do believe you must be right! There is no other explanation for it! Picks one up and throws it toward you

Yes. Exactly! Tag! You are it!

!tip

picks one up and throws it back

That hurt but I guess you're it now ;)

cries like a little girl

BULLY!! LOL

sulks away feeling terrible ;)

lobs another big one!

Ooops!!

Man it's not nice to hit a guy in the back that's not even looking Lobs 3 back!

Ohhhhh! I get it! You have siblings, don't you?

sticks out tongue and skips away

It is hard to think about how long it takes water to carve that out. We think in terms of a hundred years as a long time, maybe a lifetime. Then several lifetimes to a few milenia pushes the boundaries of human comprehension. Yet a million years, a thousand, thousand year stretches...hard to take it all in. Great shots.

Yes!! Time waits for no one. I cannot even fathom this length of time and yet, I have no trouble believing in God and Roman times...

And yet...

!tip

Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians. Much before them is fuzzy at best to me. I wonder if they were smarter? Wonder if a civilization started somewhere else, maybe a million years ago, maybe a billion? Maybe we will never know.

I say they were smarter, they just worked harder at what they did. They accomplished things in their lifetimes that we are doing now.

Oh... I never thought of it starting somewhere else.

Hello @dswigle these are some very awesome
boulders you have! Oh how we'd love to be on
that beach right now! :-)
Concretions are so cool, those huge round ones!
We have some small trippy ones up here they
call Spirit stones, from Capt Cook Park.

Love your mushroom shaped boulders!
Thank you so much for posting these
for #bouldersunday!

It is an absolute pleasure! I don't have any of those around where I live, but, I was visiting the island of Barbados and this magical sight blew me away.

Nature always has a way of surprising me. The beach is littered with boulders. I thought it was such a cool sight. Oh, yes! I miss that beach right now! I was away for two weeks, but, nobody ever gets enough vacation! :)

Thank you for the upvote and resteem!

Wow! We don't have many beaches with rocks or boulders like that... That's amazing! It also looks like some giant has been playing on the beach and arranged some rocks that way... :)

Ohhh tell me about ritual habits... :)
They are reassuring - makes you feel, all's right with the world... 🎕🎕🎕

Haha! It does look like a giant has had his way with the rock, doesn't it? I am always in awe when I see how nature is when left undisturbed.

Yes! Ritual habits are not a bad thing... it keeps me grounded in this ole world! Hi AC! Hope all is well in your part of this globe.

@dswigle,

Fascinating.

Below is a "Mushroom Rock" found in numerous places in the Sahara Desert. The wind carries more sand closer to the ground and erodes away the base more quickly than the upper boulder.

The rocks themselves are often comprised of seashells as most of the area was under the ocean until the African Continental Plate smashed into the European one. Every once in a while, you may even come across the fossilized remains of a whale skeleton.

Quill

Wow!!!

Do you know I had no idea about these? Absolutely none! The fact that they too are called Mushroom Rocks and I never found them in my search behooves me. Just as the sand has worn the path down, the waves have done the same thing.

Oh!!! Whale skeletons!!! How interesting would that be!!!! I want to thank you for the visit and the added awesome info that you shared here! You are too cool!

Have a great night!

Now those are some VERY impressive boulders @dswigle I love how the one in the first frame is balancing on the one below. An artistic symmetry with lots of appeal.

What else is appealing to me is the superb seascape location and your flowers at the end is absolutely stunning! ( U & R )

Oh, you are always so kind! I love the Caribbean Islands and I Love going Island hopping there, with different countries and their lovely cultures all within a short distance.

The artist in you needs to come. :)

Just like I need to go to Australia. I will.

!tip

The artist in me would jump at the chance to visit the Caribbean, but I will make the most of your images as it is not at all possible to see me getting there. Many thanks for your kind tip. Have a wonderful week. 💐

Oh, I can so see why, although your part of the world is really peaking my interest! I guess we always want what we don't have.

How human of us!!!

Have a most awesome week!

So true Denise. The grass is always greener.......except in Australia. We are way below our usual rainfall for the last 3 months and are about to enter into our dry season. Water restrictions are very likely in our area. 😩

Ohhh, Booo!! I cannot believe it! Already? these seasons are surely flying by!

Sounds like my morning. I want to add stretching to the routine this week but keep forgetting even with 3 sticky notes around the house.

OMG! That is so funny. Three sticky notes. I do stretch every morning. It actually helps wake my body up. Not that I need help, but, it really tunes it up for the morning!

Isn't it funny how habits can be comforting, in some ways? I don't want to get stuck in a rut, but, there is something comforting in knowing what is coming next. :)

Good morning from here!

WOW those are some impressive boulders, especially the first one.
Did you get much snow last night, we got over 6 inches here, and a snow day so enjoying a nice warm day indoors :)

We did get any at all, but then again it's too warm. I'm okay with that! On the other hand oh, I'm glad that you got some snow to keep you home. I hope you enjoy your bonus today as you know that tomorrow bring back work.

Now let me go and shuffle my rain off the sidewalk. LOL

I am glad to be at home and taking it easy LOl and I used to never take sick or snow days now I enjoy them LOOL, to use a saying we discussed recently I guess its a sign of the times or a sign of my times
Take it easy shuffling LOL

OH. my!!! That makes me laugh as we both know you will never be a sign of the times! You have more energy than two twenty-somethings! But, it is the Millenials that will be doing us in! :)

Take it easy shuffling!!! OMG! Haha!!!!

I hope you have a most wonderful day! I started a countdown on my phone for the last day of work before I can stop slaving away and start traveling for a while again.

Wish me luck on that! I need steem to make me rich!!! Okay. All I need is a little fun!

I am not so much sure I have that much energy these days, still debating whether to go for a short walk, trying to think of an excuse as to why I would need to walk to the garage around the corner, I am sure there is something I am missing in the house lOL
I put a retirement app on my phone a couple of years ago, the numbers are slowly counting down :)

I cannot retire yet, but, I can stop working! How much money do I need to be happy? Oh, I have found that I need a lot less than I thought!

I think you left your fingernail clipper in the car. Can you check it? I know you are dying to groom your nails!

Thats what I have been thinking, and I think I can afford to retire next year and still be healthy enough to enjoy it, I had for ages planned to work another 5 years but came to the conclusion I don't need to I can find things to keep myself busy and still be young enough to be able too do them :)

Exactly! Every person in my immediate family plans to retire or quit by about 50 years old, except my dad who was a bit younger. I say retired but when you are in your 40s or even 50 years old that is just quitting work to me. So, they all seem to do exceptionally well and above-average, so I see no big need to be rich when I die and leave it all behind. For what? Right now, I feel amazing and I still go on about four or five big trips a year, so why shouldn't I be doing this full-time? I enjoy traveling culture still, but I like to do it on my nickel and do it my way, not the government's. No disrespect. So yes! Why not? By the end of the summer I hope to be straightened out to where it matters not whether I work or not. Good luck to you too!

Oops I forgot I did check and my Nail clippers are here and my nails are grooomed so they must be some else, and PS I would never groom my nails in someone elses car and leave a mess, just in my own

Oh my God you are so funny! I thought they were in your car and yes! I would wonder about it if you groom your nails and someone else's car. LOL

Don't you be going out looking for them.

It's great, even though it looks simple. An adventure can change the attitudes and thoughts of the actors. Because, in the vast world there, a lot of lessons and life inspiration. Even without doubt, great adventurers say that the universe is the best teacher. Large rocks are on the side of the sea that is indan. However, to be honest I'm very impressed with your wise words, very touching.
Thanks for this @dswigle

Thank you! A lot of lessons in life inspire me and obviously you too. We learn from them, I think and even though it can be painful at the time, such as when a tragedy or sickness happens upon us, I try to never miss the lesson.

I hope that you have a most wonderful day!
