The difference between a order taker and a salesperson

If you call yourself a sales person but yet are on salary plus commission you are an order taker. I know that may offend some people but it is true. A true salesman would laugh at any kind of salary, a draw may be dependant on how big the ticket item is so may be necessary until a pipeline is built.

This will also strike some differences of opinions but I am old school and it's just my opinion. If you are a car salesperson you are an order taker. These are the folks that may have tried direct sales and couldn't cut it. Sorry any car salespeople, but it's hard to convince me that if a prospect comes on a lot looking to buy and you have what they are looking for in inventory it's a hard sell. Just get the sales manager to crunch the #s and sell the car.

Look at any personality versus a strictly sales commission person and someone that is getting a guarantee. have a 10-minute conversation with either and I guarantee you will find out which one is which.

A person that has a guaranteed paycheck each week will never be as hungry as someone on straight commission and anyone that say's I am wrong, ask them why did they choose the guaranteed paycheck? The difference is who's hungry and who's comfortable.

A salesperson isn't waiting for someone to walk through the door; a salesperson is going to go out and find the prospect to sell to.

That's true. Even as an order taker, if you're not cut out for it you can fail hard. There are some jobs out there that require a lot of self-confidence and the ability to hear "no" all day long. If you like the hunt though, it can be worth it.

And most of those jobs will be 100% commissions. It’s built for the strong. The less confident “ sales people “ take commission plus hourly/salary.
