Saturdays

Sometimes, thinking hard about what to write is the true bringer of writer’s block, next in line is being too critical on one’s self on the right topic or the right introductory sentence.

Before I wrote this first paragraph, I had thought hard on what to write, typed a few lines and erased it, then I tried again until I gave caution to the wind.

It’s Saturday morning here, if you know what I mean. Maybe I should just give you a rundown of what we do on Saturdays here where I stay, in Nigeria.

  • Nigerians wake up late on Saturdays unless there is a close family function that requires them to hit the road early or help with preparations which is a kind of contribution as a family member.

  • Our cultural traditional day for celebration is Saturday and Friday, but everybody goes to work on Friday living a room of excuse for Non-attendees, leaving Saturday as the default days for wedding and funerals (funeral is a kind of celebration here too, a kind of celebration of life well lived)

  • Nigerians like to clean their homes on Saturdays, it’s customary to find them watching heaps of clothes, watching their home drainages and much more.

  • We also make visits on Saturdays although that is more of a Sunday thing.

What else do we do?

The Children find time to play more on Saturday, it is their true Sabbath day, Sunday is church and preparation for Monday.

That is Saturday for us.

Some go to work though but that is rare except for the traders and shop owners.

For me, today has been planned already but I ain’t revealing what I have to do.

What seems good about today is the aura of rest it brings, the way it makes you feel.

The life of a Nigerian... Awesome write up sweetie @ogoowinner

Everything you said is true to a great extent for a typical Nigerian but not for me for very many reasons. First, Saturday is like every other day of the week because I'm not working offline for now. I wash other days of the week except Saturday because everyone else who is a worker or student is looking forward to washing on Saturday, the hanging line would be full and over flowing. People go out to events, other functions and visit on Saturdays, it's really convenient but I don't because my lazy introverted home-loving self wouldn't let me. I mean I want to go out, I love to but I can't cos I don't have enough vibe to do that.

I often clean the house when I was still able to do it. Now my life revolves in blogging and trying to find out how to make my life at ease.
