A Fall, A Pacemaker and a Storm

We have had an interesting few days.

Setting the stage Washington State has been having a cold spell leading into a blizzard currently underway. A state of emergency has been declared and in our area plows quit operating and emergency responders are unable to navigate the city.

On Thursday there was some very light snow and cold temperatures, but nothing exciting yet.

Thursday my husband passed out at work. It was around 10f (-6c) degrees outside. He reports he mentioned he felt a little dizzy and stated this to his co-workers right before falling over backward and losing consciousness.

He awoke lying in the snow with his co-workers performing chest compressions and on the phone with 911 operators. I'm still confused about what happened next as somehow he managed to convince them that he was fine and they allow him to drive himself home. (note to others, if someone just dropped to the ground without warning, no matter what they say, they probably shouldn't drive home on icy roads.)

When he arrived home, he was kind of staggering, speaking slowly and didn't seem okay. It was time to head to the hospital.

We've known since July he has bradycardia which is a slow heart rate prone to the heart not responding to additional activity which can cause a shortage of oxygen to the brain.

At the hospital, they decided it was time to intervene, and he was scheduled to have a pacemaker inserted to keep his heart rate in line with his physical activity.

By Saturday afternoon the pacemaker was installed, tested and he was feeling fine.

We left the hospital in blizzard conditions to come home and hunker down through the storm.

I missed a couple of days of "Steem" and we are toasty warm and comfortable while the weather rages outside.

continues to get nasty out there.

I am also very grateful that despite some interesting days that everything worked out fine when things could have been much worse right now. Where and when he fell, getting home safely and having immediate and incredible medical advances are all things to be grateful for.

Toasty, warm and happy

How did they let him drive after his medical history and a sudden drop on the ground?! That's crazy. What a scare. A few days ago a friend of mine suddenly got sweaty/hyperventilating/losing sight on the road :-/ Could have just as well gone wrong. I'm so glad your husband is fine and he has a device that will help him from now on. Wouldn't be surprized if that is going to improve a lot in terms of quality of life - my father in law got a minor heart procedure recently and says he feels 20 years younger because of it.

Precious life, Carpe Diem.

You are so right! I can't believe they let him drive, he was worse than a drunk person. He had no idea what was going on. I'm so thankful he made it home.

Also, his color looks better and he is in a great mood. I agree he is going to feel better, not worse.

Woah! There must be a light shining on you guys! So much could have ended in disaster there. Glad to hear you're both safe and warm at home now and hope your hubby continues to do well.

So happy things turned out just fine for you and your hubby.

Pacemaker sounds like the perfect thing for him

Yes, I agree.

Hoping your husband feels better very soon. I’m in Seattle. A lot of snow here too.

Oh I actually think it can be worse there, because no one is prepared for it.

Shit hun, I'm glad things are ok for you both!

Say hi to Mr@whatsup for me - and pass on my condolences.
(just in general, I mean,)
....oh yeah, and hope his heart working better to! lol

Thank you for your thoughts. Really he has been fighting this low heart rate thing for a while, I actually feel a bit relieved to have a solution.

You should have said! there loads of ways to increase your heart rate!! lol...I know about these things...

(you can always count on inappropriate flippancy, if I'm around...soz)

Take good care of your husband and don't let him to be to smart.

Holy wow! I am glad you guys are ok. Sounds like all kinds of stuff all happening at once!!

Yes, it was a lot. :)
