Butterfly and Aerodynamics
Hi guys!
Today I would like to offer an observation I made a while ago on my recent trip around Ukraine. It was a sunny but windy day, and we climbed the hill covered with huge stones (oh, I think I should keep them in mind to share them for @shata's BoulderSunday), and wildflowers covered all space between them.
As you know, where there is a flower there is a butterfly, or a bee. I noticed one as he set on the stone. The pattern of stones are very likely to the butterfly's pattern, and I'd not see him if I wasn't monitoring :)
First, he set in a usual manner, but the chance to be blown away was very high. So what he did (or was it she?) is turns his back to the wind and opened his wings so that the power of the wind pressed it to the surface of the stone. Here I captured the process:
This view is the best explanation.
This proves one more time that Nature is the best engineer, and we are just beginners trying to get a small bit of her endless wisdom.
And again, this is my submission to Thursday is Butterfly Day Giveaway- Week 12 kindly hosted by @whatisnew. Oh, and I found the name of this one, it is Vanessa cardui, very common to the whole Ukraine, thanks to @yetaras who shared a link to the catalog of Ukrainian day butterflies.
Thank you for a visit, and have a most wonderful start of a week!
Regards,
@zirochka
This is the first I have ever read about butterflies and aerodynamics and I love it! I especially love this last sentence.
Thanks for using #butterflyday tag @zirochka and don't forget to post those huge stones on @shasta's #boulersunday. : )
So sorry for this late reply. I had a family matter to attend to.
Hello, @whatisnew! I am glad to hear from you any time 🤗
It's great I could bring something new for you (and for me). I say, when I saw how it turns around and set its wings to hold the wind I said to myself: it cannot be unintentionally, it knows what to do. 😀
