After boarding up his windows in preparation for the hurricane, Gunnery Sergeant Millhouse realized he had locked himself out of his house. So what did he do? Improvise, adapt, and overcome.

A Cautionary Tale

When I was in 6th grade, I started going to gym class. At my school, you didn't have to completely strip down to shower for gym class, but you did need to change into your gym clothes. There was not much space to change in the bathrooms at our small school, or much privacy. The first time I changed my clothes in front of the other kids, I discovered something: there was more than one kind of underwear in the world.

You see, I had grown up wearing briefs, or "tighty-whities", as I would very soon learn they were called. I had only ever called them underwear. But the other boys were quick to point out that I was not wearing the socially accepted undergarments of the times. No sir, the proper attire was boxer shorts. It was implied in no uncertain terms that I would be mercilessly mocked and ridiculed each time I was spotted wearing my embarrassing undies.

That same evening I informed my mom of the sudden need to visit Wal-Mart as soon as possible to obtain the keys to my social protection. My mom was not one to spend money on things that were not needed, so I must have make a thorough and convincing case for buying redundant underwear. Before the next gym class was held, I was the proud owner of a 5-pack of Fruit of the Loom boxer shorts.

The morning of school, I began to get dressed. I put on these newfangled underoos and a wave a relief washed over me. I would no longer stand out. However, there was a complication I had not anticipated. Suddenly free from my usual comforting snugness, I began to ... well ... stand out. The sensation of free-balling it was more than my pubescent self could handle. As quickly as my relief had arrived it was gone -- replaced by horror at the thought of this happening in the middle of the school day with nary a restricting undergarment to hide it.

I changed back into what I was accustomed to wearing and paced my room, furiously considering a solution. Ah hah! I cracked the code. I would go to school in my old underwear, yes. But, I would wear my new underwear over top of my old ones. That way I could blend in without ... standing out.

I have to say, my plan worked flawlessly. No one ever got wise to my double-clad derriere. The other boys stopped making fun of me, and I can still run for public office.
