Speculating on 10-10-2018

Do you own the comic book above? I don't. I wish I did. This thing, raw, sells for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. And why shouldn't it? It's a beautiful piece of art, and I'd love to be able to secure this for my daughter's future.

Alas, I didn't. The most frustrating things about this fact is that a) I probably could have bought it at cover price because I love Batman and b) I could have purchased it at the local comic book store the week it was released. Why was I so busy buying books and art on Ebay? I should have been investing in art -aka comic book art. Detective Comics 880? Fail for not buying. Buying a Max Ernst print for $1000? Double down fail (but I keep telling myself it will work out in the end).

My goal last night was to get a "pick list/pull list" of comics I searched out today at the local retailer. It's a mix of several YouTube videos and various online sites. I wanted to post this last night, but I instead went to Venom, got home late, and then fell asleep. I'm going to call this a "test post"; these are the comics I had in my Google Keep app when I went to the store this morning to hunt down potential value. I really think one's best bet to make good investments on comics is to be lucky to get books at cover price. I bought Too Much Coffee Man off of Ebay in 2000, and guess what? They sell on Ebay for the same price I bought them 18 years ago. That's almost as bad as buying 21 Litecoins last February.

I have no idea if any of these will be of value, but going forward, I will post weekly Monday/Tuesday of each week books I'm looking to speculate on come that week Wednesday. I'll read some of them (Batman Damned, for instance); others I'll just put in a plastic bag and let them sit until my daughter can sell them (Deadpool #5-Garbage Pail Kids).. These are the comic books my research leads me to think will be of value in the future. I'd say I "think I have a feel for this," but lest I remind you, I bought 21 Litecoins last February. Idiot. So keep that in mind.

So here's what I wanted to post last night for anyone out there with a bit of risk for art speculation.

Suicide Squad #47 Variant

no luck on this one, but did buy the regular cover because Cates is so damn good.

So going forward, I promise to get a post out Monday or Tuesday night for our curator group members. I know comics shouldn't be all about the money; let's face it, comics are the modern day Greek myths, as some might say. Yet it's nice to have some fun with market values and speculation. Maybe it's the accountant in me, but I get pretty excited heading into my local store very Wednesday morning looking for some possible long gain/ value finds.

Please let me know what you think about this article. Is this something people would find value in? Or simply noise in the signal? I'd love to hear what others were looking for, bought, and thought. My store is primarily the big publishers (DC, Marvel, Image, and Dark Horse), so I'm certain there are indies out there worth the investment too.

PS : I'm very bullish on this group that @Clearbluecrypto set up on Steemvoter called Comic Book Curators. I'm happy to add a bit of value where I can to what I think could be a wonderful collaboration of comic book fans. Check it out on Steemvoter if interested.

I must say I'm learning alot from you and others in the group. Honestly that was one of the purposes of the group. You never get to know what you don't know until you dive in.
"(Deadpool #5-Garbage Pail Kids).. These are the comic books my research leads me to think will be of value in the future" This is of great value because being out of the game for so long, I'm trying to see where the future value will be. Marvel, avengers, and for DC, The Justice league we could see these comics turning animated, then possibly going to the big screen. One cartoon that I loved and I never read comics about but I could see it being on the big screen one day is Young justice, I love that cartoon series. I really liked the story line.
I appreciate you setting some days to do a regular scheduled post. I will at some point get on a regular schedule of posting about comics shortly. I will be doing some more promotion of the group and thank you for contributing because it will allow others to see our material and attract more. Thanks for the plug for our group and helping to grow the membership it will benefit us all in the long run.
It would be nice at some point for us to post within the group and not have to worry about buying votes because we would have our own self contained ecosystem. We pay each other and we share the profits. That's ultimately the vision of this guild.

of course, I'm happy to advertise where I can too! I'm happy to contribute where I can, and looking forward to the Monday/Tuesday speculative pieces as well. I've been doing the research the past few weeks, so I figured I'd share my work with everyone. Of course there are no guarantees, but the art on some of these books are gorgeous to have anyway.

And as always, really looking forward to growing with the group. I picked up a speculative book on Ebay this week and will get a post out on that this afternoon. Thanks again @clearbluecrypto !

I've never collected comics with a speculation mindset, so I'm probably the person least-qualified to answer the question. That said, while I don't speculate, I am interested enough in the hobby that I like to get an idea of what's new from what others are writing about, and articles like this combined with the stuff @blewitt does as another comic shop owner scratch that itch quite well.

So yeah, I'm totally down for it! Keep up the good work. :)

thank you @modernzorker! Looking forward to collaboration with this group. Following @blewitt as well, so much appreciative for the reference.

Working on a Venom review for our newly found guild; have you seen that film yet?

I haven't. I'm probably risking a butt-kicking by admitting this, but I'm really not much of a Marvel fan. I've seen a handful of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stuff over the years (first couple Spider-Man movies, Avengers, etc...) but I honestly don't have much interest in their stuff. The biggest I ever got into Marvel was their Transformers series, which I absolutely loved. But as far as stuff like X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of their A-list output? Not my thing.

There are a couple of exceptions--the Battle Royale rip-off they did a year or so ago, Avengers: Arena, was quite enjoyable, for example--but for whatever reason Marvel just never resonated with me that much.

I've played more Marvel-licensed video games than I have seen Marvel-themed movies. How's that for sad? :D

I'm so disappointed @modernzorker that your not into the "MARVEL UNIVERSE" lol.
I'm sure you have some other comic interests that you can share with us.

I hear you; I've been a DC fan forever. Not sure why DC resonates so much, but my favorites. As far as Marvel, I'd check out Cates' Venom, if you haven't yet. Crazy, demented, psychotic stuff...but so damn good. And the art is beautiful. I feel like we're on the cusp of a dying media, so I'm enjoying as much of it (and keeping as much of it) as I can before it goes away for good.

I upvoted your post.

Keep steeming for a better tomorrow.
