Movie Review - SKYSCRAPER (it has CRAP in it)

in #creativity6 years ago

Hello Steemians,
I hope you all are in good health and I am also doing great at being inconsistent here on the Steemit. But I have a good reason for that. Work. Office Work. I don't know when but the work multiplied so much that I am working in even in my dreams. Let's leave the office bitching aside (That's what coffee break are for :-)).

So I caught a break recently and I tried to relax the only way I know, By watching a movie. Lately, I had a very nice run with the regional cinema and their style. I mean, I am not a big fan of the south Indian movies but I stumbled upon a few good ones in the last couple of days. And maybe that what made the Gods angry and I landed upon a flaming tower of sh!t.

Yup! I am talking about this year July released 'THE SKYSCRAPER'.

As usual here is your spoiler alert.

Spoiler Alert: This review contains my strong and personal opinion of the movie the skyscraper. And even though I usually avoid the use of curses. I can't promise that there won't be any in this. Oh! Also, I will be discussing the plot of this 1hr and 40 mins long ridiculous piece of Die Hard rip-off. I will try my level best to keep the major plot point a secret so that when you watch that movie, you can hate it even more.

OK, Before I start. I am gonna set this straight Die-Hard is the best movie in that genre. I Love it, I really do, I love everything about it, Except for the horrible sequels. But it's 2018 and you have access to the most amazing technology to date, So obviously the expectation would be high. If you can't beat die-hard at the very least level with it. Anyway, I am not going to compare these two as this movie doesn't deserve that respect to be placed in the same league.

And the movie starts off with the introduction to main character Will Sawyer who is an FBI agent played by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. And on a failed mission he losses his Leg and retires to start a new career as a security reviewer or auditor for skyscrapers. And is asked to review the world tallest CGIed building, The Pearl built in HongKong. Which is introduced over the opening credits alongside a heavy news exposition. so he then moves into the building that is under review, ALONG WITH HIS FAMILY. Now, this was the biggest facepalm moment for me. Why would someone move into a building which is currently under security review and not yet opened to the general public? Fine, Your nature of work is that way. I understand. But why the family. I too have a day job which requires me to be on the site sometimes for an extended period of time by that doesn't mean that I bring in my family to the office or site. But I got over it quickly when I saw the interaction of the man lead with the family member. The rock acting was missing his usual charm. And he is not that charming.

So to move the plot along the Rock meets up with the owner of the Pearl. Mr. Zhou played by Ng Chin Han, You may recognize him from the time when Batman kidnapped Mr. Lao in the Dark Knight Movie. He is Mr. Lao. (I am being honest here, after visiting his Wikipedia page I recognized him from several other movies). Who is accompanied by other characters who I guess are important to the plot but I am going to skip because. They were not developed properly and If the writer didn't invest much in them, why should I? I mean the security guard was there to die and the other two by the looks on their faces you can tell that they are backstabbing kinda guy. So Mr. Zhou gives the Rock a tablet with the admin rights to the buildings security features. And as predicted the Backstabbing guy tried to steal it from the rock when they were outside the building. And finally succeeded in getting the tablet. A hacker gets the access and disables all the other access through the tablet, leaving the sole control and access to the tablet. And the hacker wins a bullet through the head from the backstabbing team.

Meanwhile, a terrorist group hired by the local crime syndicate attacked the building and sets the 96th floor on fire. And the other team disabled all the fire measures spreading the fire and engulfing the floors above. The rock sees the fire and gets into the floor above using the tower cranes and from here on out is the mindless action scenes. Its just stupidity after stupidity. Its just cliches from all the other action films, mission impossible, Die Hard, James Bond and I am pretty sure I have seen it somewhere. Because at every frame I felt deja-vu and I gained some kind of supernatural ability to know what is going to happen in next 5 mins. Maybe I have the power of Haki and I am General Katakuri.

Oh, wait!!! The climax was something that is entirely unexpected. No, I am not talking about the death of the villain. The wife gets the tablet reboots the system. And that deploys fire measure and the fire gets extinguished just like that. To be honest, I am no expert in fire safety but if a building is on such a fire I don't think any system survives such fire. No seriously, The fire gets extinguished just like that like turning off the power or something. Again, I am no expert such fire can't be controlled easily and the firefight would go on for such a long time. Speaking of firefighting, The damn fire brigade was missing from the entire movie. They were probably like "No worry guys, I heard the rock is in the building".

Honestly, This would have been a much better movie if Rock was a Fire Fighter.

Note – This is my personal view of the Movie, And it is to be taken lightly. All the comments that I made were on the performance of these actors and not the actor themselves. Do not take my word as a word of an expert. I am no expert yet.

Sort:

I like spoilers because I know what will happen next and things that I can anticipate especially if it's a horror movie :D

These days it's difficult to find a really honest review most are written to overhype the movie so it sells. You did a good job there!

I too agree with you. Because of these false advertising and overhype reviews the movies gets way too much attention than they needed to be.

Thanks for dropping by. :-)

You should write more honest film review. That one was epic and brutal :D

Hahaha!!! Thanks for the compliment. I sure am trying to find my rhythm to get these movies and beat them up... hahahah.

Haha! Your movie posts are the polar opposite of mine - I try to avoid crappy movies - but I like them. I like your style.

Glad you're back to writing, buddy! :>)
