Bobi the Bad's Reality TV interrupted by ~Squirrel! ~ and bird down after window strike!

Brave little furballs raid bird-food on our deck,

sunflower seeds I'd set out for the nut-hatch, for Bobi the Bad's "Reality TV" entertainment.

Prince and Bear

are hooked on this show and watch in uncharacteristic quietude.

Ah, Prince of the unfortunate, unmatched ears,

Soon, the dogs move to the door,

and Prince starts scratching the glass to get out. Squirrels got a head start, so, yeah,

I let the dogs out.

And Prince is giving 'em hell, those thieving squirrels.

The nuthatch, sad to say, hit a window and fell to the deck stunned, but the dogs were indoors at the time and paid no attention. The nuthatch apparently recovered and flew off. Our daughter emailed her ornithology professor about this incident and he assured her the sudden absence of that bird is a good sign. No cat or dog was out to make it disappear.

I didn't get a picture of the nuthatch, but in past years, a rare cuckoo crashed loudly and fell dead on our deck, while a pine warbler (I think that's the right ID) lived. It looked a lot like this little fellow:

Now we also know this:

Many birds are able to fly off after window collisions, but if they are knocked out or stunned and on the ground they should be gently picked up and placed in a warm, dark, sheltered place for at least two hours. ... If it's hot outside, the bird can actually overheat, so it's still best to bring the box inside. source: What Can I Do to Help a Bird That Has Collided With a Window?

It's been a rough winter,

worse than the usual prolonged Midwest deep-freeze. Should we feed the birds, or shouldn't we?

The squirrels are waving their little paws: Yes! Yes!

Much animal activity at home, dear @carolkean!
I have no idea what to do with a wounded bird. And I certainly wouldn't know what to do with any life, not even mine, in such cold weather.
The photos are cold.
Very cold.
I don't know if you understand my tribulation. I was born and grew up, I live in a place where we reach the lowest temperature when the season arrives when it looks like it's going to rain (the other season we have is the dry season, when it doesn't rain!).
A hug, and good luck to squirrels and birds!

P.S. By the way, I loved the squirrel's face. I will keep that photo as a reference for illustration.

Thank you for reading and commenting!
LOL - you have no idea what cold really looks like, if that looked cold to you. I should show you our meadow. Looks like the moon. It's wild.
I'd choose the hot dry desert with cold nights, but I've lived in the Midwest my entire life. Humid, emerald-green summers bring vegetables. I'd need a source of water and a greenhouse or hydroponics to survive in the desert. And there's nothing but sand and cactus and little nocturnal creatures. Nearest town a four-hour drive. Cousin lives in the Arizona desert and loves it but she's given me second thoughts. Temperatue regions tend to be over-populated. So I hunker down with minus-ten-Fahrenheit winters and live for Spring.

Poor little squirrels, they just can't have a relaxed meal. 😤

Nice work on this post! I liked it.

Thank you!!
"Poor" little squirrels are always stealing from the birds. We finally have one squirrel-proof feeder. The rest is a free-for-all.

I love the over-the-shoulder shots, it made me think you put on a go-pro on them... wait... getting an idea....

A lot of animals in this post. Bobi the Bad, sounds like a tough guy.

LOL!! Quite the opposite: Bobi tries to be a bad*ass but he's actually just a pain in the *ss. Now, our old ginger tom, he was The Man. Utterly cool. Well behaved. Except for his serial killer side... the birds, the mice!... but he was the best cat I ever had, in his old age, anyway...

I have a Scary Mary who hates other cats. Should call her Bad Mary :-)

Cute! My cats do the same thing going wild when they see the squirrel through the window. They’re inside cats so the squirrel is safe.

Aw, glad to hear they don't get to chase the entertainment! Bobi loves watching birds too, but he doesn't get a chance to catch one.
