DD 8 Research Challenge | Human Trafficking

This special edition of Deep Dives delves into the growing international epidemic of human trafficking and modern day slavery. This is an enormous topic to cover, and one that Deep Dives researchers have only begun to scratch the surface of, yet it's an important topic that deserves more attention in society considering it's size, scale and reach.

Human trafficking has ballooned into a 100 billion dollar industry in recent years with no sign of slowing down.

You can see the original Human Trafficking @deepdives post, here.

Without a doubt, the subject matter is very dark and something that many people would prefer to look away from rather than confront.

In future instalments of Deep Dives you can be sure there will be more research conducted on this topic.

Montreal Hotbed for Sex Trafficking - The Bangkok of the West

@krnel

This was an eye-opener of an article covering human trafficking in the author's own city of Montreal. Like @krnel, I'd never heard of Montreal being referred to as "The Bangkok of the West". What I found so compelling about this article is that it encapsulates how the scourge of human trafficking is ever present in our own cities and towns though it largely goes unnoticed by the general public. When authorities make arrests related to trafficking/smuggling/prostitution/exploitation it appears that the networks generally remain intact and simply move operations to more favorable locations.

Montreal police broke up a juvenile prostitution ring in 2003, where minor girls were forced to engage in nude dancing and prostitution. After the crack down in Montreal, the sex trafficking and prostitution rings moved to Quebec City and Niagara Falls, Ontario to keep their "business" alive.

Though this is only one example, it hints at the scale of the industry and also how sexual exploitation is driven by significant profits. I thought this paragraph was particularly salient.

It's a low risk "enterprise" for criminals that brings in high profits, and is considered a form of slavery of the modern era. Victims are of any race or gender, including transgender. Those targeted have "histories of being marginalized, abused or isolated." This is often the case with children who are in the foster care system.

Anyone who's taken the time to investigate child abuse and sexual exploitation of children becomes all to aware of the cycle of abuse that children in the foster care system suffer under.

Human trafficking may be 'low risk' for traffickers but the human cost to those forced into this situation is incalculable. Once again, thank you @krnel for another high quality piece of research. If you haven't done so, please GO READ this article!

Second Place (13 SBD)

No-golden-future-Use-of-child-labour-in-gold-mining-in-Uganda-Bifilarcoil.jpg

Cobalt Battery Slavery

@bifilarcoil

Connecting child slavery in Africa to the increasingly ravenous demand for minerals and precious metals needed to power our western lives is at the center of the outstanding research done by @bifilarcoil.

Though at times this piece seems to expand in all directions it keeps coming back to the notion that what creates the conditions for slavery and exploitation is corporate greed. Keen insights are extrapolated through this exploration of dozens of Wikileaks government emails. The mining of Cobalt, a mineral essential in the production of cell phones and cutting edge batteries, indicates where current and future conflicts will materialize as powerful nations compete to plunder the African continent with disastrous results for the native populations.

Fascinating and original, thanks for this unique entry @bifilarcoil!

Third Place (8 SBD)

angryman chinese connect.jpg

Human Trafficking - The Chinese Connection

@angryman

In the same vein as @krnel's piece, this article is a journey into human trafficking from the local perspective, this time - New York City. As the title suggests, @angryman explores the various Chinese criminal gangs of New York and their connections to human trafficking in the city. With a refreshing to the point style, @angryman reveals the top three 'base of operations' where criminal gangs connected to human trafficking operate which includes Queens, NY.

I think @angryman sums up the article nicely and all of us would probably agree with this assessment:

In closing, I wish that I had some solutions to offer beyond which those that have already been proposed by numerous professionals, either never acted upon or failed to help abet the problem of human trafficking.

As long as there is a market for the services of human traffickers, the atrocities perpetrated by them upon vulnerable and unfortunate victims will continue.

Welcome to Deep Dives @angryman and thank you for your stimulating post!

Before we conclude, I'd like to say that @thoughts-in-time also had a great entry on the topic of the use of prison slave labour and it's a very important topic that does not get the attention that it deserves. Check it out here!

Congratulations and a huge thank you to those of you who participated. This is a hard subject to cover, and your helping shed light on this is one of the most important endeavors needed now. It is clear that people in high levels of power are active participants in at least turning the other way, to outright participating in this evil perversion. The cries of these victims demand that we all come together and say enough.

I too found the post by @krnel surprising. We have so much human trafficking taking place at the U.S./Mexican border that I have been reporting on, and when his article showed they are dragging people 3000+ more miles across the U.S. into Canada, it confirms for me just how many in power HAVE to be involved.

There are so many people being trapped in horrible situations, and it all boils down to greed. The simple greed of a few people leads to abuse of a great number of people.

Huge respect to @krnel @bifilarcoil & @angryman and a big shout to @thoughts-in-time Thank you for highlighting this most difficult of subject matters and for shining a light in the darkest of places. I really feel that such a wealth of information and research is an essential addition to the steem blockchain. Excellent work and thank you to #deepdives for enabling such great work!

Here, here — I'll second that! Another successful writing contest. I always appreciate the opportunity to participate in V's contests which are awesome. He's one of a small handful of Steemians I know of who keep steem on and poppin!

Thanks for the support my friends! Steady as she goes ;)

Thank you for the compliment @perceptualflaws .

Thanks, that's great to hear form a critical thinker!

Congrats @krnel and everyone involved on some great quality research here! I hope I can re-enter the fray on the next one.

Thank you very much @palikari ... I'm happy to have participated.

Congrats @krnel and @angryman!

Thanks for the feedback @deepdives. It's greatly appreciated!
The cobalt mining industry is FAR bigger then I initially expected, I knew it was far bigger then cellphone market, but the scale of the car industry is just mind blowing.
The use of cobalt in cellphones is nothing compared to the demand of the car industry.

Thank you @bifilarcoil and congratulations to you as well. I am happy to have been a part of this interesting challenge/prompt.

yes, these deepdives are really worth doing. I would recommend anyone to give it a try. Even if just to get some appreciation for journalism. Every dive I made so far presented me with new and surprising challenges. It's a great workout for the brain.

Yes...can lead to 'brain drain' depending how lengthy one chooses to go. I imagine there are many who would like to try, but feel like they may lack the writing skills. It can also be time consuming which some people may not afford.

Hope your day is a happy one.

hehe indeed
I try to do 10 mental push-ups each day to keep the grey blob fit.

yes many may think that they don't have the writing skills.
Actually when I had a first look at it I thought the same. But I just tried anyway and see how I would fail. And I'm still trying . :-) So i'm convinced that everyone can do this. But it is a matter of courage to just go for it and see how far you get.
And everyone gives great feedback, and that's what actually makes me want to try again and again. Learn more... And my articles are still very unpolished so i'm sure someone will be able to write better then me.

And yes it consumes time, but it also rewards. All those people making shitposts that dont go anywhere is not rewarding at all, and i must say some people manage to create beautiful shitposts. Would be interesting to see those people write about real shit. That could turn journalism on it's head.

As the platform grows, hopefully we'll see more people contributing in a positive manner. Right now, I am fortunate enough to be finding a satisfying number of dedicated creators to keep things interesting.

Yes, once this starts to expand it will be interesting in many new ways

Thank you @deepdives for the wonderful 'welcome' and recognition of my participating piece. Also, I congratulate all the other writers who contributed the work as well.

I'm curious to know if DeepDives welcomes the use of the tag, should we wish to use it at any time with appropriate content?

Feel free to express your opinion in the comments as to any specific topics you would like to see covered or if you prefer the open ended variety.

Personally, I would prefer a more 'open ended' variety similar to #8 for a more comfortable consideration of participating in the future; otherwise, the prompt feels more like 'school' or 'work' assignments...(to 'me' at least)

Best wishes to all of you, and have a happy day...

PS: I almost forgot...Thanks for the 'Moola' (might be misspelled)

Hey @angryman, yes you're welcome to use the tag #deepdives for your own posts. For example, @geke uses it daily with her series. There's no curation trail as of now for #deepdives so there's no guarantee of receiving upvotes as official entries are prioritized. However, I check the tag pretty regularly for good articles ;) Hope you decide to join in again in upcoming deep dives we're always happy to have more people getting involved.

Thanks v4vapid for responding. No curation trail is fine with me, I'm happy to post and be welcomed by the communities of interest.

Hope you decide to join in again in upcoming deep dives we're always happy to have more people getting involved.

I 'do' plan to contribute to the future challenges. I'll check out @geke as well.

Many Regards

Great job everyone! Thank you for the top selection! I was hoping there would be more entries with this topic though :(

Congrats, your article was an eye-opener. I was hoping to add my contribution but i ran out of time. I'll hang on to it for a future round of human trafficking. Thanks for your steady participation in the project - your contributions have been excellent :)

Congrats to the winners! I read krnel’s post but not the others yet so looking forward to reading them.

Congrats @krnel @angryman and bifilarcoil
Great insight on the traumatised state if trafficking...
