Wood Chuck Babies - Push2Talk Episode 33 - As Spring becomes Summer
As we continue to pass our days here in Wisconsin, we try to see the magical world that can become invisible to many...the world that might even become bothersome, intrusive or invasive.
The lowly woodchuck is a vegetarian and also a root eater - according to wikipedia Marmota monax is the same as a ground hog. It is a rodent, it burrows, and it has babies!
We had noticed our resident Wood Chuck was super well-fed as it stomped around eating grass tips. But when we saw the 3 new babies - we saw her in a new light!
We have been getting pretty good at pretending we are not looking; if we mind our own business they usually go about there's. Each episode we are getting better at wildlife observation and photography!
As Spring becomes Summer, we would like to encourage you to keep your eyes open, pay attention to the life around you - and that may mean taking a break from your screens!

How cool is that!! Many times people get upset with nature... and I try to remind them...
They were here first!!
This goes with our time outside the last few days. Mostly to cut the grass, before more rain came! But also... to plant some flowers and bushes, AND to get me outside... try to "whip" that MS monster a good one!
As I was checking out our big Hosta on the porch, I noticed some leaves and pollen strands from the trees, so I wanted to get that out...
That wasn't leaves or pollen...
It was a Wren's nest!!
I carefully put it back in place... we have seen two eggs in there, but no Wren's... though they do land close, and tell us we are intruding!! I'll update if we see some barbies in there!

I saw a woodchuck out in the backyard yesterday, but I haven't seen any babies yet. Too cute!
Alright! If I may ask, have you seen where they stay? Ours seem to live under the deck!
They burrow into the ground. Most often I have heard people complain about them burrowing under a garden shed. It would make perfect sense for them to have a place underneath a deck. Mine seems to go down somewhere along the creek in the woods, so I'm not certain where the borough is. Have you ever seen one climb a tree? That was shocking to me the first time I saw a woodchuck up in a spindly tree trying to get out on a branch and eat the leaves. As if there wasn't enough foliage on the ground for him already!

awesome videos. The more familiar they get with you the more fun you'll have watching. I don't get to see to many examples of wild life in my parts. Just a few squirells here and there.
Yes - the wildlife begins to notice that we are noticing, and they seem to like it!
