Watch My First DTube Video!

DTube takes 25% of author rewards which on a $110 post with $10 to curators would be $25. Thank you to @heimindanger for getting DTube live as shared at https://steemit.com/video/@heimindanger/introducing-dtube-a-decentralized-video-platform-using-steem-and-ipfs.

In this video I explore some big questions we have to face right away which I also typed out here!

  1. Will we upvote videos that are definitely or probably violating copyright law thereby placing everyone on Steem at risk of attack from criticism (free publicity) or law suits? Within the first week we can already see a music video uploaded along with many full length movies including The Matrix, Die Hard, and other classics I love! With the earnings many of these are getting, a lot more are sure to follow! I personally think copyright needs to go and no one should have the right to claim exclusive rights to anything in their work. For example, I never file copyright claims against other creators and would not flag any of my videos uploaded to DTube. Not everyone else sees it that way ...
  2. How far will we go with our uploads to DTube? Will we start grabbing our favorite pornos and uploading them alongside videos of violence and hate speech? Will DTube be a magnet for that which is banned on YouTube? I personally am against any censorship matched with education. Censorship is always about control and power while requiring shame to operate.
  3. Is giving 25% of our author rewards fair or will we ask for or accept a lower or higher fee? 25% seems fair to start but what if it takes off? What if the price of Steem is 10x now or 10%? Will the fee be flexible and transparent to us at all times? YouTube currently takes 43% on ad revenue assuming they let us monetize the video at all which makes the DTube fee look great to me!

Thank you very much for reading my first post on DTube and seeing my first exclusive video here! Would you upvote for more because 25% of the rewards go to DTube?

Love,
Jerry Banfield

PS: Witness votes are the most powerful votes we make on Steem because one vote for a witness lasts indefinitely! Would you please make a vote for jerrybanfield as a witness or set jerrybanfield as a proxy to handle all witness votes at https://steemit.com/~witnesses because when we make our votes, we feel in control of our future together?

Thanks for trying out @dtube @jerrybanfield I hope you didn't get any major problems for uploading or anything. The video played just fine on my side.

You are right about what you say about copyrights, apart from the dtube 'hosting'. DTube does not need a hosting to run ;)

Also, I can now say for sure as the first beneficiary rewards are coming in, but it is definately 25% of the author rewards. So basically remove 25% from the displayed number for curators, then remove 25% again for dtube, then the author gets the rest. Beneficiary rewards are 100% SP (we don't get any SBD). Hope that clarifies it :D

@heimindanger thank you for making such a rapid reply and helping make the experience more accurate for the readers! I will edit the section talking about hosting!

An finally I need to mention that comments are 0%, only videos are 25% :)

@heimindanger thank you for sharing that there is no percentage on comments!

@heimindanger I would love to vote for you as a witness if you were running the latest version and interested in receiving votes!

I am not running for witness and don't intend to. Doesn't mean I don't support STEEM, it just means I'm too lazy to setup a server with huge ram and monitor it daily.

I understand thank you for explaining!

Hi Jerry. Do you know how to subscribe to your channel? I don't see an option to do that. Thanks

is Dtube invitation only? I tried to login using my Steem user and password, it didn't work.

Hey @king-of-kings it's not the password for steemit actually ! It's your private post key and you can find it by going into your wallet, then click on permissions, then under post it will say show private key and you click that and it will give you the password key for dtube :)

I don't understand how to get to dtube whatsoever I feel slower than a sloth in a 🐌 race

THANK YOU SO MUCH.. I Had the same problem.. thanks

Thank you. Don't blame yourself too much for playing this horrendous game ;)

Hi Jerry I'm sorry to bother you but I signed up to steemit and I can't use the same credentials to log into Dtube. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for your great video and salient points

Hello @heimindanger I followed @Jerrybanfield's lead and posted my first one too. I am very inexperienced but it was an easy process for me. I documented the experience in my latest post on steemit.

I'm not asking for an upvote or resteem I just think it may be helpful for you to see what it was like for a minnow who is new. Thank you!

https://steemit.com/dtube/@meatspoon/i-just-made-my-first-dtube-video

Explain me this please, how you get those 25% if you have just the posting key ? You said that the posting key don't allow transaction !

the copyright issue is a serious one and discussed at length here:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@ura-soul/sharing-copyrighted-video-material-on-dtube-coule-put-steemit-s-future-at-risk-and-devalue-steem-my-thoughts-having-worked-in
maybe consider putting a disclaimer for now "you agree to upload only original content".
indiependently to what anyones view is on copyright, we know the Feds ( FBI etc) take it extremely seriously and last thing we want is to attract their attention already and see them crack down on the site or its developers.

Cool stuff, I was wondering how'd you go about it. I tried to talk about it during the Whaletank / Whaleshares talk yesterday. DECENT is doing something similar like you but they don't have a rewards pool.

  • I see the comments on @Dtube don't display formatting yet!

I'm new here, but I have not had success with uploading videos yet. Every time I've tried, it crashes. I'm looking forward to using it though! Thanks!

@heimindanger trying out Dtube and noticed sometimes the video plays and sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes the snap image shows or it doesn't, is this due to the curator? If so, I think my first two videos are with a curator that is not fast since nothing is displaying. Can I become a curator to help speed things up?

I still don't understand what you say about hosting: '…DTube does not need a hosting to run…'. How is that possible? Doesn't your setup needs a huge amount of storage somewhere?

Yay @ League of Legends plug :) If dTube proves to have the bandwidth, Youtube won't be able to compete...

there is a bug that doesn't allow my videos to play, i can play other vids tho but just not mine.

hmm, i wonder if it's a bandwidth issue?

It's time to stop allowing the old Grey man of the video sharing service to dictate terms to creators. Allowing YouTube and its model of flagging for copyright infringement has no place in the decentralized space for us content creators.
As for revenue share, as long as the transparency is kept as it is I'm all for giving the dtube coder a slice.
I'm just glad to have somewhere to park my videos off of the dead YouTube.

I do see possibly a new angle to look at copyrights if dtube is going that direction. So, for those who create content meant to be sold like music, films, etc, they can come to dtube and open a channel.

Having another venue to spread talent is a good thing. As the YouTube apocalypse happens to many creators there.

@jerrybanfield Thanks for sharing about Dtube. Great site and idea, except that for the life of me, I cannot upload a simple 10 minute video to it. Keeps saying "failed to fetch". Do you need a certain level of usable SP to do anything on Dtube? Or do I need to sign up on some other website to get Dtube to work for me? IMHO Censorship and Youtube's monopoly is not the way to go forward, but we also do not want a platform that turns into a cesspool of bad content and copyrights quagmire.

No you don't need a certain amount of SP to post on there I was able to.

Some days there are updates or failures in the network! My video did not upload today and I worked around this by trying a new upload after switching my server in the settings!

Really glad you're on Dtube Jerry! Dtube along with Zappl very well could make Steemit the #1 media delivery method in the world. We'll have quite a few users in the future never even visit the Steemit.com website that will be actively posting/using the Steem block chain. Simply incredible!

The copyright issue is serious though. This is something that needs addressed going forward b/c we don't want a few users causing massive issues for Steem in the future. We have a great community and incredible technology driving Steem, let's keep the momentum going and don't make foolish short term decisions regarding posting things are direct violations of copyright law.

Thank you for the warm welcome @orionschariot! While I agree about the copyright, the irony is that a lot of people might start using Steem because of the ability to get away with it now! I have not used Zappl before and am taking a look now!

Hi @jerrybanfield I'm the community manager at Zappl here are some beta test videos of it in action. Any questions just holla!

@steemitqa - wow! My profile is your video's cover image and shows up at about 3:36 :)

What a pleasent surprise!

Video has become unavailable.

Thanks for sharing

Very intetesting post. Thanks sharing. Now I have information about Dtube. Upvoted.

Great video Jerry, always nice to see you in action. I think that @heimindanger did us a good favor (and himself too) by showing the world how great steem blockchain is and thus we all should send in our support by using Dtube (pls see my latest blog post about steem block chain, its low price and taking advantage of it). However, this will certainly lead to video plagiarism as there are no mechanism to catch plagiarists using Dtube however with time, our dear @cheetah and its team will start taking action too-hopefully. Price is ok for now however should come down when the platform kicks off by fall this year. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed weekend.

Time to buy steem and power up bud!!!!

Thank you Charles for looking at this with us because now it is wide open to use for plagiarism!

You are welcome...lets hope that @cheetah , @steemcleaners et al will develop further talents in the segment of video plagiarism...wish you a blessed weekend.

Hah I doubt that... video plagiarism is gonna take some serious youtube style filters to o sift through theough uploaded video and it would require lot of work and energy and honestly the worldsis Just gonna have to deal with drive ha having copyrighted material and lawsuits won't do a thing . EVEr hear that old saying "Bitcoin user said unaffected " ?

Haha good point however do not underestimat the power of innovation

I have heard also Craig Grant and other big Steemians starting speaking increasingly more frequent about this DTube and its potential for the future.
Indeed exciting times we live in now, friends!

Will we start grabbing our favorite pornos

Of course!
