catching fleas 2019

in #dtube5 years ago

This is a small clip I made of me catching sandfleas for bait. When catching them, look for little V shapes in the sand and you wait for the right wave. I like the small waves the best. You can catch them on the bigger waves but the smaller ones seem to work better. I think they go down in the sand when the wave is bigger, so they do not get washed out to sea. When they come up they are feeding on the rotting seaweed. People do not like to see seaweed on the beach and some cities now have machines that go down the beach and remove all the seaweed. They do not care if something uses it for food. It is unsightly and smells. Bad for tourism, aka, money.

Very interesting, and that looks like quite a haul in the bucket at the end there. How long would that last you? As a city dweller, I imagined that fishermen would buy bait in the fish-bait shop;)

@deirdyweirdy If someone was going fishing for a day they can afford to buy their bait, but we fish every day and that would get very pricey. I ended up getting 11 bags full and that would last almost 5 days with both of us using them. We blanch them then dry and put in sandwich bags and freeze. I need to spend every day getting them until the fish get here but did not go today because my calves are very sore from not being used to walking on the beach, I walk over 5 miles each time I go. Sometimes driving miles checking each beach till I find them. Yesterday we drove round trip 80 miles because someone told us they were at a certain beach and they were big, they were not there. Ended up going back to the beach I had been getting them at.

Crikey, that sounds like one hell of a lot of hard work!

@deirdyweirdy Yes it is a lot of work, anything you do in fishing is a lot of work.

Great video @myjob. The water looks nice and warm. I didn’t know sandfleas were so plentiful. Would they not hop out of the bucket?

@redheadpei sandfleas do not hop like a flea, they are really a crab called mole crab. They can not grab hold to the bucket to crawl out.

Is true, many animals feed on that seaweed but just because it smells bad the government take it away :(

@blacklux think of the money they could save if they left Mother Natures things alone.

I have friends who live on the coast and really their work is very hard.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

@truelovemom Are they fishermen?

If they are fishermen, on several occasions I went to drag pepitonas, although the others are my favorites.
