How the EOS forum works on eostalk.io and why it is important to STEEM

in #eos6 years ago (edited)

Wonder how this forum works? Why did EOStalk choose steem? Some quick questions answered.

Reading eostalk to find the latest news and discussions is quite easy. Simply go point your browser to https://eostalk.io

With thanks to @jesta, the creator of chainbb (forum software linked to the steem blockchain).

However some people have questions about WHO is behind the scenes of running this forum. If you login with your posting key over there, is it dangerous?

Let's talk about that...

First of all, can chainbb forums be trusted?

A: Yes, and no. You have to trust the server that is running the software. In this case, eostalk.io isn't run by @officialfuzzy at all... but he vouches for that person who does run it and I trust @officialfuzzy, so ... I think it's fine.

In addition, your posting key only allows certain functions. The biggest function that your posting key does NOT ALLOW, is that it the key cannot authorize a transfer any of your funds or change your active key or owner key password (or even see them).

As more interfaces to the steem blockchain go live, asking for your posting key will be more common. Nonethless you should always fully research the website or phone app that is asking for your posting key and should things go awry, you should know how to change your posting key at a later date.

Do the forum moderators act as a beneficiary to your posting rewards there?

Just like Steemit, Inc. needs to finance themselves for their free service of operating steemit.com (which is expensive to host all of those servers)...

Both the developer of chainbb (@jesta) and the forum operator needs to earn some funds to offset the costs of hosting that gui interface to the steem blockchain.

....and you do want them to earn little bit of SP (Steem Power) for doing so, because they are providing a valuable service. Be wary of any forum operators that do something similar, and don't make anything, because you'd have to ask yourself, how are they going to break even?

Let's look at a steem transaction from @officialfuzzy who recently wrote to eostalk.io directly:

https://steemd.com/tx/a9a04ef120f33566847ff8290fd55b9e49a67bb5

The total reward weight is:

  • 10,000 = 100%

Here you can see the the post rewards has 2 beneficiaries:

...these are very nominal fees and tiny... I think they're healthy for chainbb (and forum operators) to support the load on their services and time to maintain this system.

The author of the post ends up with (8500 = 85%)

I never heard of posting beneficiaries before, can you explain a bit more?

Here's a good post written by @abit that explained it 8 months ago when HF 18 introduced it:
https://steemit.com/howto/@abit/hard-fork-18-how-to-use-author-reward-splitting-feature

So in short, chainbb is a good thing... It attracts people only interested in EOS, (but not steem) to start earning STEEM with their posts. Once they do, they're more likely to be interested in STEEM and learn how to buy/sell/trade STEEM as well.

This helps attract new people to the steem blockchain and steem token who may never have wanted to use it before.

Projects like EOS which are "STEEM friendly" is a really good thing to see.

So go ahead and use EOStalk.io not only to read, but to post EOS-related topics too...

I've written this particular post from Steemit.com, but my next one will be directly on the EOSTalk.io chainbb forum.

Great to read about EOS being Steem friendly and how the general public here is also quite keen to learn about the EOS project! Thanks for the sharing the information. Good for you, good for us all!

Namaste :)

Very interesting...another platform I am not really familiar with. I know there is a lot going on which is why I need to keep learning.

Thanks for the heads up and the link. I will check that out. Presently I dont have any EOS (loading up on STEEM and BTS). Certainly something to keep an eye on.

I think EOS is worth spending time to research on as its potential is higher than STEEM and BTS. It just that it is not functional yet, but IMO its market cap should be comparable or surpass Ethereum in the future.

very informative post.every moment i learn something from your post.love to read it.

Thanks for sharing this piece. I think chainbb is moving in the right direction because as a content consumer, I find steemit too overwhelming for now, and harder to build a close-knitted community revolving a topic. I think it might be a good idea to pitch the steem-powered-forum idea to existing forums around the world that has great content, but struggle to monetize.

Very interesting

why it does not use steemconnect to handle signin?

To be honest - I don't know that steemconnect provides the best way to use the Steem blockchain to power websites. You're relying on a 3rd party service at that point for your authorization and are completely out of luck when it's down. You are also authorizing someone else to actually use your account... which some may not like either.

It's always something that can be added at a later date - but right now not depending on it is a plus in my book.

Thanks for the answer @jesta - time will tell when the time is right or not. :)

You can read about steemconnect created by busy.org here:

-- note: he answered above. :)
In v1 it did not allow beneficiaries... apparently v2 will allow beneficiaries. It's also a new project, so we'll have to see if @jesta wants to add that functionality.

I know he is aware of it. 5 months ago he mentioned it in a reply, so we'll see.

(as of 3 days ago, he's currently working on moderator roles for forums to share in rewards, I think all rewards will be adjusted as things get more popular with chainbb. If you want to help chainbb continue to be popular, allowing 15% of your posts going to the project is an easy win for it to happen)

I really love this guy #intelliguy you just know how to post the right thing.
Nice one.
