Invaders

Tongues other than mine
that must not find their way
into the plains of our terran village:
languages of ivory and soapsuds,
wafts of rainbow words imploding,
deflating the earth like a vast balloon.

Chemical-drill English—
defender against monstrosities,
hurling serpents
turned to crossbow bolts
turned to agonies of purple flame.

Vocalizer of chagrin,
builder of bismuth cackles,
acidification
in a momentary cloudburst.

An eroding gamble,
a shelter of steel,
and a mute boy, running—
split into seven doppelgängers
measured by the iris' compass
vanishing into the sacred forest
in a flash of weird angles.

Tongues other than ours:
a barrage of transparent explosives
swim from blasphemous sectors of space,
trickling diaphanous fins,
gemmed hieroglyphics
borne by starred appendages
in gestures of sublimated carbon.

Greetings, dear @d-pend! I'm glad you had time to delight us with this episode of scifi, a sublimated view of the universe from a privileged perspective, living like an implosive process of crystal gems.

[...]wafts of rainbow words imploding,
deflating the earth like a vast balloon..

"Invaders" relates us to a crucial moment in which a monumental display of explosive luminous iridescence occurs during a battle, supported by suggestive images, in which the high gem Bismuth participates:

Vocalizer of chagrin,
builder of bismuth cackles,
acidification
in a momentary cloudburst.

Tongues other than ours:
a barrage of transparent explosives
swim from blasphemous sectors of space

The end is referred to as inconclusive, in full swing, because it translates that gem letters come out between the clouds after the clash of galactic forces.

trickling diaphanous fins,
gemmed hieroglyphics
borne by starred appendages
in gestures of sublimated carbon.

I hope you have a fantastic day. I embrace you infinitely my friend.

Thank you for your rich commentary, @zeleiracordero! The impetus to write this came after reading Octavio Paz in Spanish and then writing in English, myself. I imagined alien tongues so foreign that they would devastate Earthlings' linguistic conceptions completely!

@d-pend,

What did you think of Paz?

He was a complicated guy ... which, in my book, tends to be a good thing (when you think deeply about things , they have a way of becoming complicated). He was to the Spanish-speaking world much as was Orwell to the English-speaking one: a non-ideological idealist, if that's not too much of a contradiction in terms.

ha,ha,ha... That's funny!

@d-pend,

Interesting theme to think about.

Language isn't just about how we communicate, it's about how we think. Words are but the containers of ideas and information and how we string them together is empowering ... and limiting.

Even between mutually influencing languages like English and French, there are ideas that, while commonplace in one, simply do not exist in the other. The expression of those ideas, or lack of it, influences their respective cultures.

This reality is why foreign travel (if you get out of the western hotels) is so valuable. It makes you realize that your assumptions about the nature of reality are just that, assumptions. Other cultures can see things in a dramatically different way and it is not always apparent that their way is worse.

One can only imagine then the differences, not just in the language itself but the ideas and information it expresses, if it were to be of extra-terrestial and non-human origin. All human languages contain syntax ... subject, verb, object (although not always in that order). Indeed, it's hard to imagine a language not containing them.

But then again, many foreigners cannot believe that English does not masculinize or feminize objects ... and Anglophones can't fathom why other languages do.

Would non-humans need subjects, verbs and objects? Maybe such things are merely a reflection of how the human brain thinks. If they didn't, would it even be possible to communicate with them?

And what about sensory information that is so important to human thought, and hence, speech. How does one explain the concept of "green" to a blind man? If the aliens had different senses, how could such information gap be bridged?

Bats have eco-location. Sharks have the ability to sense bio-electric fields. How would either of those senses be described to us if they could talk?

I always wondered how your writing would change when your mind got set on new challenges. I love it!!

I start reading and think he is writing about people who don't want to be bothered with new languages. Then it seems like the poem took a twist and talked about the language learner's struggle to run to his or her "comfortable" language.

An eroding gamble,
a shelter of steel,
and a mute boy, running—
split into seven doppelgängers
measured by the iris' compass
vanishing into the sacred forest
in a flash of weird angles.

Finally the poem ends reminding me of an abstract painting called "The Order of the Angels."

Wow... there is a lot more here than the eye can see.

I think it will continue to transform with life's barrages of joy and vicissitudes. :-) That's something I love dearly about art in general: and poetry specifically seems to document these phase-shifts well.

This poem had several immediate interpretative possibilities, this being the most direct. Well spotted! On a more esoteric layer, I was trying to imagine completely extraterrestrial languages from other galaxies. Of course, as something of an earthling myself, this stretches the imagination to its max. So from a concrete level I must by necessity draw parallels with the "alien" tongues of other countries on our very planet.

Thank you for your comment! Have a wonderful day :-)

I couldn't find a good picture but the painting is in Chicago. It takes up the whole room and is laying flat on the ground with several wires attached. There is no good photograph around. This is the closest I could find:

But a lot of his other works can be found here:

Nanu, Nanu!!

The thing that always bothers me is that sound waves cannot resonate in space^^

Many people feel threatened when they invade their territory and even more so when they are from foreign languages. Thank God always put someone with a shield to protect new people with good intentions and willing to be heard. I see you as that person who protects and listens to new languages. Thanks @ d-pend.

The great primal fear of the unknown!

Thank God always put someone with a shield to protect new people with good intentions and willing to be heard. I see you as that person who protects and listens to new languages.

I wish I had enough years, intellect, or focus to learn them all. Beauty in its endless manifestations never ceases to amaze me.

Thank you, @corderosiete :-) 🙏

Thank you for being here for me, so I can be here for you.
Enjoy your day and stay creative!
