X-Days of Music Challenge, 1976steemCreated with Sketch.

in #esteem5 years ago

I had seen this challenge a couple of times from @slobberchops and wondered when I was eventually going to be picked for it.

I was a little surprised when it wasn't @slobberchops that selected me but @steevc instead.

I probably would have just blown @slobberchops off because he is a bit crazy (have you seen his picture?), but since it was @steevc I knew I had to participate.

Obviously, I am joking. I have much respect for both @slobberchops and @steevc and appreciate the interaction they have blessed me with on Steemit. If you aren't currently following them, you should definitely rectify that immediately.

Most good stories start at the beginning and this one is no exception. I am going to take you all the way back to just about the year of my birth. 1976 was a fantastic year for music as I was scrolling through the songs.

By the way, I am not great with song dates, so I used the handy dandy Google and typed in "songs from 1976" and it gives you a nice grid style view of popular songs that were released that year.

If you are taking part in one of these challenges and your memory is like mine, it can be a lifesaver!

England Dan and John Ford Coley - I'd really love to see you tonight

I am going to be honest, I am a pretty mellow guy when it comes to music. The fact is, I like all kinds of music, but my main wheelhouse is more adult contemporary. It's really not as bad as you think though. I am not talking about Celine Dion as much as I am talking about James Taylor, Paul Simon, Elton John, Steely Dan, you know stuff like that: mellow...

Well you don't get much more mellow than England Dan and John Ford Coley. They had some great harmonies and put out some music that really epitomized this era. I was lucky enough to snag one of their albums on vinyl off of Ebay a while ago and it always puts me in a good mood when I give it a spin.

Boston - More than a feeling

Like I said though, I like a little bit of everything and for the year I chose, this song is a great example of that. This album is probably my most favorite Boston album of all time. It has so many good songs on it. If it only had Peace of Mind and More Than a Feeling on it, that would be enough. Then you add in Foreplay/Long Time, Smokin', and all the others and it is just a fantastic album.

I actually have More than a feeling set as my alarm music on my phone. It's what I wake up to every morning at 5 AM and I am still not sick of it. That should tell you something! I was strolling through a thrift store several years ago and saw this album on vinyl and knew I had to buy it. I don't regret it for a second.

Bozz Skaggs - Lowdown

I've gotta say, I love me some funk and in 1976 Bozz Skaggs was killing the funk. I have always really loved this song, even before I knew who sang it. Once I learned the name of the guy was Bozz, you should be able to totally understand why I was drawn to it.

It has a fantastic groove and though the lyrics are pretty sparse it just tells a great story about a guy that needs to lay the smack down on his lady. Not physically of course, I think we can all agree that would be wrong, but she's running around the town telling everyone his business. That's just not cool man.

Johnny Cash - One piece at a time

There were so many great bands that I wanted to include in here. I am actually a little embarrased that I had England Dan and John Ford Coley in here and I didn't have a Hall & Oates song. I knew I had to have at least one country song though.

Johnny Cash, what more can I say, The Man in Black is a legend. I picked this song because my dad is a retired auto worker. He didn't work in Detroit like the song says and he didn't build his car from parts he stole out of the factory, but it was a good job that provided for his family.

Where I grew up most kids dads worked for the big chemical company in town. We were sort of outsiders because of that, but looking back, I don't really regret it at all. Knowing my dad, he doesn't either :)

I am going to spare you all and leave it at that for 1976. If I kept going, we would all be here until 2019.

Oh, by the way, I nominate @bigtom13 for this challenge.

I had that Boston album when I was was a teen, but only liked More than a feeling which I played so much I cant listen to it any more. Then much later, I discovered.. Foreplay/Long Time, now that's cool.

I don't think I have ever played a song so much that I can't listen to it anymore. Good thing you don't have it set as your alarm. You might go crazy! I have a different alarm for the weekends (when I can't sleep in). It is a Van Halen song :)

I love More than a Feeling! I'd forgotten all about Boz Scaggs - that is such a good record. I even like some of England Dan and John Ford Coley's songs. Punk was just taking off in the UK in 1976, but it was good to have those mellow sounds as a balance to all the aggression!

Yeah, that makes sense. I am a big fan of some of those punk bands as well. I just find myself leaning more towards the mellow as I get older... I literally do like a little bit of everything so I can't really pick one specific genre.

Yes I'm the same. I just like a bit of everything (almost).
