Freewrite Day 538 Shade

in #esteem5 years ago

I have really white skin with freckles, so shade from the sun is something I seek and have all my life. It only takes a few minutes for me to be badly burned. I also have light eyes that are sensitive to brightness so sunglasses are a constant part of my life too.

In California I was not an umbrella user and I do not wear hats. So I was sometimes out in sun I should not have been, making me hot, and burning my skin at times.

In SE Asia umbrellas are a fact of life and everyone has many of them. If it is not sun, it’s rain, so you need the umbrella shade many times when you are out. You can find cheap umbrellas for sale at the entrance of almost any store and sometimes luxury versions depending on where you are shopping.

Men, women and kids use umbrellas as a daily necessity and I have joined right in. What a relief! The shade from an umbrella is also cooling and this help is a Godsend in the middle of the day.

The only issue for me is that umbrellas are heavy, bulky, and picky to open and close. My arthritic hands are not too thrilled with this new task. In a storm with wind, they want to be jerked and grabbed out of your hands. If you are carrying packages, this adds to the fun.

It is a small price to pay for protection though, and all my umbrellas are pink since I am trying to be more lady-like now that I am thin. When I lose one umbrella or it breaks, the next cheap pink one I see that collapses is mine. I could not be happier than when I find one I like.

My post is for the #freewrite daily challenge by @mariannewest. Freewrite is a great way to post on steemit when you do not think you have the time, or talent, or anything to say. It’s a great way to start regular posting on steemit. I know you can do this too! Here is Marianne’s freewrite prompt post for today. Give it a try and surprise yourself.

Sort:

When I was growing up in western Washington many years ago, most people carried an umbrella if it looked at all like it might rain. (Based on what @glenalbrethsen wrote, perhaps that has changed.) When we moved to Montana, I automatically got out my umbrella on a rainy morning and got all sorts of stares. It doesn't rain nearly as much there, or as long, so people don't bother with umbrellas! I do like the idea of using one for shade. I will have to try that this summer, and see if I get more stares. I'm old now, so it doesn't matter to me.

I love it! I'm old and in a foreign country, so it really does not matter. Socks with sandals for me lol. But here you are strange if you do not have an umbrella (or 10 of them).

Hey, @scribblingramma.

It seems to me that umbrellas were in wider use within my lifetime the farther I go back, too. I can remember our family having a few lying around. Now, we don't have any that get any use, and I can't think of any time I've seen anyone out and about with one.

I guess that's just the changing of the times, and in this case, I don't believe it's necessarily for the better. I'm really surprised that there hasn't been some kind of breakthrough in some kind of fashionable, wearable rain guards or something. I'm still waiting for personal force fields myself. I think I'll be waiting for a while. :)

I've often thought I wouldn't mind walking in the rain if I didn't wear glasses. They get so spotted and streaked, and it becomes difficult to focus.

Hey, @fitinfun.

I used to be able to be out in the sun for longer periods of time, but it's been at least 10 years and I'm sure longer that I burn without major SPF, and even then, there's a chance that I will. The top of my head starts to burn with a minute or two, so I consigned myself to hats. I didn't like them at first, and they're still annoying at times, but I guess I'm getting used to them.

It's strange, but you don't see many umbrellas up in Oregon, either, even though it rains regularly from Fall through Spring. I guess most people just don't bother. Of course, you can be hard pressed to find people wearing any kind of jacket, let alone that's water resistant. Especially kids. Drives me crazy. :)

It sounds like, though, you're in good company with the umbrella use. I'm glad there's at least a group of folks that have some kind of good sense when it comes to rain. :)

I cannot wear sunscreen at all. It is poison to my system with auto-immune disease. So shade is my only hope.

It's well know that people who live in cold climates are insane. I was living in San Diego and working for the US Navy. They sent me to Bremerton WA a lot. I do not care what the weather was up there, I would be freezing and see people jogging while almost naked.

Now I am a big umbrella fan and I recommend it to all. Find your color and start a trend :)

I do find umbrella is not easy to handle too especially the opening and closing. And when the wind comes. But hey, I do like your pink umbrella. Hope someone will come out with a new design where it pops open and closes way easier than the one we have.

I'm glad it is not only me! I will be first in line for the easy umbrella. Thank you so much for the reminder. I am on it now!

Eat a lot of tomatoes it big chance it helps against sunburn (or better the tomato concentrate). They did try it out with people with a very white skin before the left for the sun and it turned out 30% less sunburn.
