Scott summarized information on a sample of "fatal battered-baby cases" perpetrated in anger ... 15 of the 29 killers – 52% – were stepfathers."[1] Although initially there was no analysis of this raw data, empirical evidence has since been collected on what is now called the Cinderella effect through official records, reports, and census.
As you can see even though most fathers are not "step-fathers", the step-fathers accounted for more than half of battered-baby cases.
If you go to a Zoo you may see this same thing among other mammals. It is more common in packs of animals where there is high disparity between males.
Looking across hundreds of species, infanticide is more common in mammals when a few males must compete to reproduce with several females.
What we can take from this is that all measures should be taken to keep children in the care of the biological parents, or relatives with common genetics.
Adoption should only be considered in the case of total abandonment or extreme cases.
