Day 200: 5 Minute Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: party

Gary Appleton was having another major birthday party, it seemed like he had one every month or so. Gary's Mom and my Mother were best friends since high school, so I was going to have to go and that was just a fact. I'm Edger, and it's not that I hate being over at Gary's house and having access to some of his cool stuff, it's that Gary is a spoiled brat and a snob who gets just about anything that he wants. Gary's dad is a lawyer who is rarely at home, but when he does get any time off from his job he lavishes Gary with gifts and trips to any and every theme park that you can think of. No, I don't hate being at Gary's house, I just hate Gary and the fact that we will be taking him a gift that Mom hopes is up to his standards. I rarely get anything like Gary gets, but don't get me wrong, I get plenty and I'm happy with my stuff. It's just that I know that when no one is around Gary will be rubbing it in. I will hear all about every fantastic gift that he receives and with each one that he unwraps he will invariably look over and give me that ridiculous haar haar haar laugh of his. The adults won't even notice, and even though I wouldn't have the pukes life of luxury with his part-time parents and piles of expensive junk, it still hurts just a little.

I had snuck off to the den with a piece of cake, a solo cup full of iced down Coca-Cola, and one of Gary's older comic books. Mom would frown if she caught me in there with food but Mrs. Appleton lets Gary bring whatever he wants to in here and I'm much more conscientious than he is. I was engrossed in a Captain America adventure when a girl about my age that I had never met walked in and stood right in front of me. Hi, she said, I'm Pixie Anne Hunter, my family and I just moved in across the street and I got invited to that dimwits birthday party. I take it that you are hiding in here because you're not overly happy to be here either, she said. I was now looking at her over the top of the comic in shock, I couldn't speak, I just gulped real big then opened my mouth but nothing came out. Well, she said, I'm going back home and wanted to see if you wanted to go see my pet turtle Flash. Fa fa flash I managed to get out? Why would you name a turtle flash when they are known for being so slow? Like almost everything else, she replied, speed is relative. When I went to pick out a turtle at the pet store she continued, Flash was the fastest turtle in the tank. I could tap on the side of the glass, or hold out a pinch of food and he would come ... running... we both laughed at the mental image of a running turtle.

Going over to Gary's was never the same again, my Mom was amazed at how much my attitude towards him had changed. If she knew that I was just coming to see Pixie Anne and that we had become best friends then I'm sure that I would have been having some long talks about the differences between boys and girls. That was a complication that I didn't need, Gary always took off with his friends while Pixie and I tromped through the nearby stand of hardwoods and played around the creek. And of course Flash went with us on all of these excursions, he loved to explore the outdoors as much as we did. I received the best gift at Gary's birthday party ever, a real honest to goodness friend that liked me for just being me, and I felt the same about her. It just doesn't get any better than that, and it was something that Gary would never get with his snobbish "friends."
