Black Fly Season

If you live in the city or even a large town it’s not normal to see someone wearing a mosquito net like Hubby is in the above photo.

Black flies and mosquitoes are part of country living in the Maritimes. The 1st of June the black flies are out in full force for about two weeks. Of course you can use repellent like Off or Deet to keep them away but Hubby prefers to wear the net if he’s working outside this time of year.

There’s no concrete evidence that insect spray (or fly dope as it is sometimes called) is bad for you or causes any skin reactions but Hubby doesn’t like to use it.

There’s been so much talk about the affect on humans and animals from all the sprays used to control pests on crops. Our bees and butterflies are becoming endangered because of the use of insecticides and pesticides.

We are slowing poisoning our planet and that’s not normal.

We are certainly doing that, we poison our planet, our house slowly.

Yes, we need to stop listening to all the marketing ploys to get us to buy these products and start learning natural ways to control pests.

I heard that those black flies have vicious bites. Yes, everything is being poisoned. We are usually swarming with bees and butterflies at this time of year and we are lucky if we see just a couple of each. What a damn shame!

Yes those black flies can give a good bite. Rubbing vinegar on the bites will stop the itch.
I know what you mean by the shortage of bees and butterflies. They are being killed off with the spraying. The nicotine used in the pesticide spray for corn is deadly to the bees. I’ms sure all the spraying done on the potato crop isn’t helping either. There is even something used to kill the tops of the potato plant before harvesting. As humans, bees are linked to our survival on this planet. If they are killed off then the human race will be close behind. Sorry,I’m starting to rant...

I know how important the bees are to us. Don't even get me started!!!
I saw about 2 dozen lightning bugs tonight for the first time this year and I am hoping that is a good sign.

I think that is a good sign as I only even see two or three anymore whereas years ago there were dozens.

We all should use the less harmful means to control those plagues, otherwise we will ending our live sustainability as a specie.

True, Joel. Slowly the word is getting out that it’s more important to save the bees than have a weed free manicured lawn. Whenever I see a lawn like that, I am disgusted and know the owners have used chemicals.

At the end of the day it is a matter of education and communication. One of the things that I would like to see of the powerful countries to change is that if there is not prompt monetary incentive, then there are not actions... if corporations could show in their general board meetings environmental caring as a profit figures the world would be a paradise for us all.

But that is quite disturbing because even from a really pragmatic approach they do are potential profit, if we protect the sustainability of human activities then we will be protecting the future profit potential... thus is just stupid to continue our economic activities as they are today.

A Garden of Eden for us all could be attainable but there is too much greed in the world.

Protecting the environment has to be top priority. Not only the harm by chemicals but so much waste with disposable items, plastics, etc.

Exactly, we need to learn to feel and cherish every inch of land as part of our home! Would we be gladly accepting that somebody throws out of a sudden a bunch of waste on our dining room? The day we start caring for the oceans and rivers (the very same where we swim and take seafood from) the way some care for their sports cars we will not be dumping all our waste material there.

Howdy redheadpei! wow I've never seen anyone wear a net like that to work in, they're that bad up there huh? It's better than spraying yourself down with stuff you don't like!

Actually they weren’t too bad this June. They didn’t last long. Hubs wore it when cutting the grass, etc as the black flies were around that day.
I see quite a few people wearing the netting when working in their garden.

That's very interesting redheadpei! ya know, you would think that we'd have clouds of flies and mosquitos but we have almost none of either insect for some reason, it's baffled us ever since we got here, but we're thankful!

You are lucky not to have them. They don’t seem to be in the cities but like the fresh air of the country. Maybe the hotter heat where you are has roasted them. 😊

lol! maybe you're right, I hope so. There has to be some advantages of the heat!
