This Is How Life Begins

Yesterday was about time to go to the cemetery for the usual spring cleaning and for planting some flowers. The weather was a bit cold and windy but still nice. The grave needs to be cleaned each year when the snow melts because it's full of leaves and other things that don't belong there.

As I was gathering the leaves I saw some walnut shells, which is not unusual at all. Birds are picking up walnuts and basically everything they can and take them to places, and also drop them. So when I picked it up, this is what I was holding in my hand.

The walnut already had a root, a pretty decent one. This was not a surprise for me. Last year my brother had to dig almost 40 cm deep to take a similar one out.

At this point I didn't know what to do. Normally I should have thrown it out as I didn't need it, but how can i throw it away? This is the beginning, a life that needs to be protected. After a minute of thinking I decided to re-plant it next to the fence, where it has a chance to grow. Grass is cut in the cemetery pretty regularly, if I plant it next to the grave, there's a high chance it's not going to survive. Plus if it survives and starts to grow, the deep roots can move graves and we don't want that.

This is how I planted it next to the fence, where hopefully no one is going to disturb it. The rest is up to nature but I believe it has a very good chance.

I found out that jackdaws are doing this. These birds are hiding walnuts and not only, in order to get them later during winter. This is how they are basically planting trees, which is good.

So I can say that yesterday I planted a tree 😀 Next time I'm going to check it out, I hope it will be there, growing normally.
