Update On Kilauea Volcanic Eruption - Requesting Prayers and Donations for Big Island Hawaii Displaced Residents

in #hawaii6 years ago (edited)

Today thick, gray plumes started pouring from Halemaumau Crater. Geologists have warned of increased activity. This means the crater is lowering and poses a huge risk for more violent explosions shooting "ballistic rocks" weighing up to several tons about a mile away.

Since the Kilauea Volcanic eruption on May 4, 2018 and a Magnitude 6.9 earthquake, there have been hundreds of quakes under 3.0 and several more fissures eruptions in the Leilani Estates on the Big Island of Hawaii.

A look at the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii. USGS/HAWAII VOLCANO OBSERVATORY

Yesterday there were two more explosions in the Lelani Estates and one more today.

Here is a photo I took from the crater lookout the night before the eruption.

USGS scientists warn that the steady lowering of the lava lake means the potential for more “explosive eruptions” near the summit is increasing. Geologists say the lava lake level has dropped more than 720 feet since the floor of the Pu'u O'o crater collapsed on April 30. It continues to drop as new fissures emerge in Leilani Estates which is approximately 25 miles from the lava lake. If the lava column drops to the groundwater level, it could possibly trigger steam-driven explosions, shooting debris out into the area around the summit. The lava lake is dropping as it travels downslope toward Leilani Estates and has triggered at least 14 eruptions so far.

Rockfalls from the crater’s walls along with ash plumes are expected to continue as the lava lake drops. This is what happened this morning. The USGS stated that a rockfall (not water interacting with lava) generated a short-lived explosion at Halemaumau Crater, sending an ash column high into the air. Geologists have examined the ash deposits on the rim of Halemaumau Crater found fresh lava fragments hurled from the lava lake. When the ash cleared from the crater about an hour after the explosion, scientists were able to see the lava lake surface and confirm it is still above the water table.

The blue dot on the map is where I am located, so I feel fairly safe here. One of my main concerns is that if that area should break off, it will cause more major quakes and a possible tsunami.

The number of homes destroyed by Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is up to 35 as of today. Four more "unspecified structures have been destroyed. Thousands of residents who have been evacuated still do not know when or if they will be able to return to their homes. Fissures that were created by the main eruption are also causing steam and toxic gasses to unpredictably vent out. Authorities are continuously monitoring the activity in each of the districts. Some of the 1,700 residents displaced were allowed to return their home to collect pets and possessions or medications.

AT&T has activated its text-to-donate line. To make a donation, text REDCROSS to 90999 — that will send a $10 donation to the American Red Cross and its recovery efforts, which will then appear on the donor’s monthly bill. Donations may also be made directly to the American Red Cross Hawaii Chapter through its website or by calling (808) 739-8109.

On Monday, Kolten Wong, the Cardinal's second baseman, set up a GoFundMepage with a goal to raise $200,000 for Hawaii Island residents affected by Kilauea's recent eruptions. His page has already raised $50,413.

"If you can help, no matter the amount, it will mean the world to those who have lost so much in such a sudden turn of events," said Wong in a statement. "We feel that it’s our kuleana (responsibility) to do what we can to assist our neighbors, family, and friends." "Let’s show the Big Island the meaning of the 'Aloha Spirit," Wong said. In the video posted on the GoFundMe page, Wong says raising funds for lava victims' disaster relief is especially meaningful to him because he grew up just miles away from Leilani Estates. That community, located near Wong's hometown of Hilo, has suffered the most devastation as fissures continued to open throughout the neighborhood over the weekend.

WOW! That is some truly crazy stuff right there! I have never seen anything like it (thankfully!) I am amazed that people will live in such close proximity to volcanoes. "Then they wonder why there's lava in the living room..." (George Carlin) Stay safe, and thank you for sharing <3

Yep seems crazy to me too but after this is all over, if that part of the island still exists, a lot will rebuild in the same area.

Wow, really? Incredible! I don't quite know how to process that information, @thethreehugs... I mean, those beautiful, beautiful homes... And all those peoples' belongings and...I just can't get my head around that...

I was reading about this earlier today my thoughts and prayers for everyone affected

Aww, thanks my friend. Haven't watched the news today but I think things have calmed down a bit today. Of course more could break out anytime as the crater is getting close to sea level. If you want updates and more videos, go to http://hawaiinewsnow.com

Thanks for the link and wishing the best

Hey buddy, you are welcome!

This is scary. That last video especially as those people were walking over the breaks in the ground to get as close as they could to the lava and fires. When that one guy pointed out that the fire was closing in on the propane tank I was thinking get out of there. Then him and the camera person walked back through there as they were leaving. If that tank explodes that canister will travel far and fast.

Yep, the lava flows pretty slow...people can get a bit too comfortable and more fissures keep popping up. The tank was pretty scary. Lots of tourist going to the crater lookout. Me, I am sticking close to home as safer here and a lot less vog.

Oh, God! That's terrible! And those people on the video risking their lives!
May God help Hawaii residents. :(

Yes it is but Hawaii Residents are very prepared for disasters. The Lava flows fairly slow, it is the new explosions they have to be cautious of. They have all the current danger areas blocked off and loads of security and help.

Umm... That's good. Thank God they are prepared. :)

Well if it gets worse, a lot more people will be affected. There is a geo-thermal plant in the area. Also if the lava in the crater drops below sea level...it could spew rocks and ashes all around the island.

Well, let's hope it does not get worse. For the good of many people.
