37 Ways To Reduce Your Anxiety - #8 Meditation

in #health6 years ago

When you first start meditating, it probably won't be the perfect, tranquil experience you hope it will be. You will probably need to itch some part of your body, you'll get distracted and your mind might be overly active. Don't panic, it is your first time.

I used to be anxious in my own company, or if I wasn't actively doing something. One of the major benefits I gained from meditation was the ability to be still, without the need to fill that space of time with anything. To be simply still is the opposite of doing, it is being.

In a world where there is so much to do, all the time, meditation can offer balance. The opportunity to pause and just BE. Here are the steps I use to make meditation easier to accomplish:

  1. Sit comfortably.
  2. Breathe in whatever way is comfortable.
  3. Focus on one thing. Eg. your breathing or music.
  4. Allow all thoughts to be as they are (not needed to be acted upon).
  5. Return the focus to breathing.

Decide how long you would like to meditate for, perhaps 20-30 minutes. Set a timer or play music that goes for that length of time, so you know when to stop.

Note: If one particular step causes apprehension, adjust it to suit your needs. Make your own meditation process, simple and repeatable.

Meditation, when practiced consistently can reduce anxiety in the moment and in general.
