Could Milk and Dairy be Causing Your Acne and Oily Skin?

Beauty comes from within, as does oily skin and acne! There are a variety of things which can cause this within our bodies, but for the moment we’ll just look at what milk and dairy could be doing to exacerbate this.

Your body produces an oil called sebum, which conditions your skin. It exits your body via the pores in your skin and excessive sebum can cause both oily skin and zits if it gets trapped in your pores then becomes infected and inflamed. Milk is known to both cause inflammation and, when it reacts with the testosterone in your body, increase sebum production.

It is believed to be the milk proteins and whey which cause the reactions, which is why skimmed milk could actually be worse for your skin than whole milk, due to the extra whey added to make it more palatable.

The potential good news, if you like your dairy, is that fermented milk products, such as yogurt and cheeses, may not be such an issue, because the fermentation process reduces the amount of IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) in the product. This seems to make them less of a trigger for acne. Fermentation can also help with digestion, so it may also be that dairy products which are more easily digested are less problematic. Milk with only A2 proteins has been found to be more easily digested by those who can't tolerate standard milk with A1 proteins in.

So your best approach to figuring out if dairy is causing your acne might be cutting out milk, cream and, yes I'm sorry, ice cream for a week or two first and seeing how your acne responds. If you really struggle to give up milk, you could try seeing how you go with A2 milk instead. If there is no discernible change with that then you might need to try cutting out the cheese and yogurt too.

Of course there are lots of potential underlying causes for acne, so removing dairy may not be a magic bullet for you, but don't despair, there are other things to try.

Dairy is quiet hard to digest and for that reason alone I think it is best to restrict it and only give to children once they are 2. I personally do not have any dairy in my diet, thank you for spreading awareness about how dairy can be damaging for ones health.

Likely not helped by the hormones pumped into the cows, the pasteurisation and homogenisation of the milk and whatever other unnatural things they like to do to and feed the cows.

I’ve been plagued by migraines my whole life. Never knew why. A couple years ago I heard Dr. Robert Morse mention that he had the same problem as a child living on the farm and drinking lots of milk. He said that is what caused his migraines. I have since quit all dairy and haven’t had a migraine since.
And yes, my skin is clearer than it has ever been.

That must be such a relief after all those years of migraines. I have a friend whose migraines stopped when she stopped gluten. She struggled with giving up milk entirely, but found that she could tolerate A2 milk and cheese.

Fascinating but makes sense eating another animal essential nutrients would effect ours. I hardly eat dairy to be honest mainly at work to be honest. This kind of information is now becoming the norm but if you actually think about it then it's kinda simple logic really 💯🐒

My son is only 3, but we noticed that after removing all dairy, his little odd breakouts went away. We’ve experimented with goat milk a little, but not enough to know if that still effects him or not.

It would be interesting to know if it does affect him. The say goat's milk is easier for us to digest. I can't remember if I read that it is an A2 protein milk.
