Ooops! I Did it Again!!

Have you ever started your day thinking "I will eat well today, I will go to the gym, I will get my veggies in, have some healthy protein and continue on my road to health!"?

And then... your boss lays a huge project on you, due yesterday. Your spouse is in a pissy mood and picks a fight. You get some bad news. You just don't feel well. You're mad, sad, angry - or maybe even - happy, joyful, celebratory?

Your internal voice is saying "f*** that, I'm going to go have a cheeseburger, nachos, ice cream, candy, fries, chips, a bottle of wine" or a thousand other things you vowed, just this morning, not to eat.

Your day blew up for something unrelated to eating and your eating plan goes to hell in a handbasket. Why?

It's "easy" to follow through with all those good intentions within the context of a "good" day. Or at least a day that didn't hit a bump in the road.

But how do we handle it within the context of a "bad" day - a bad piece of news, a negative event, a negative emotion?

Step 1

Be kind to yourself. Don't beat yourself up because you went off the deep end and devoured a pint of ice cream.

Step 2

Think about what other things bring you comfort or at least release the emotions you are trying to cover up with food.

  • Maybe it's to sit alone and read a book
  • Maybe it's to go work out
  • Maybe it's to do some stretching and breathing
  • Maybe it's yoga
  • Maybe it's meditating
  • Maybe it's to sit in your car and scream
  • Maybe you really don't know and will have to get creative and try some new things

Step 3

Next time the situation arises where you want to go eat everything in sight because you're having a bad day - stop - breathe - and try the thing to comfort yourself that doesn't involve eating. Be cognizant, be kind to yourself, and if you are successful know that this "win" will improve your day and strengthen this habit of choosing something other than food for comfort.

The more often you reinforce the habit of comforting yourself with food the angrier you'll become with yourself. Not to mention the further away from your health goals you'll be.

The more often you reinforce the habit of comforting yourself in more productive ways the happier you'll be with yourself AND the closer you will be to your health goals.

Remember Step 1 (be kind to yourself) - if you run to food for comfort, it's okay. Breathe, put your plan in place to change that habit, life is a learning process - you won't always get it right first shot.

As my mother always said, "If at first, you don't succeed, try, try again." (Which apparently my mother didn't make up but was popularized by William Edward Hickson which is attributed to Thomas H. Palmer in his Teacher's Manual, and The Children of the New Forest by Frederick Marryat)

I would love to tell you I never eat/drink when the going gets tough, but I would be lying. I also know I kick myself when I do that. I also know I should follow my own steps on how to mitigate this problem. I can say I've gotten better - I can't say I'm perfect at it. And we're back to step 1 (be kind to yourself).

Health is about your overall diet and lifestyle. One binge in the context of an overall healthy diet is quite another thing than a binge in the context of a "smothering your emotions with food" diet.

Reinforcing the good habits and doing away with the bad, in baby steps, one habit at a time, will lead you down the path to the life you want.

Enjoy your food for the nourishment it gives your body and the pleasure it brings. Eat when you're hungry. Stop before you're full. Learn how to use other methods to soothe yourself during an emotional crisis.

Always honor the wonderful being you are.

In Peace, Love and Health.

It happened a lot of time to me, I usually forget to hydrate or to eat enough and the next day I wake up with a huge regrets and an epic headache.

Right? I'm not a fan of the regrets, been there......done that.
Thanks for stopping by!

WOW!
Never thought about it like this. I always lose focus, I'm probably afflicted by ADHD, I do so many during the day. I lose myself on the PC, in projects, in steemit and so on. So I forget to order food for lunch. I only eat crackers and bananas during the day and in the evening I stuff myself with all the things I want and crave. I know it's not right and I say it to myself that I will never do something like this again until the next day.

So please, anyone reading this, think of your health before doing it like me. And thanks @tamala for bringing it to our attention.

It's so easy to get caught up in the day and then BAM! Ooops I did it again.

I find it's easier if I have a "go to" healthy meal that's my default, like ordering the same thing from the same place. That way there's no "decision fatigue" when I'm already in the middle of everything and don't want to take the time to decide what, from where, etc.

You do end up eating the same thing a lot but since my mind is elsewhere I don't even notice and then I'm not inclined to binge later.

Thanks for stopping by!

Yes you are right.
I might think about that. Sadly for me the go to is junk food on my way home :(

ahhhhh i like it! the context of a good day vs bad day!!!!

I love how we all bring different perspectives to each week!!!!!!! it makes you think "ohhhhhhhh i didn't think of it that way!!!!"

so good - and yes i saw your DM and yes - whispering will ensue. LOL but im running to make something to eat before DITO. but whispering will happen LOLOLOL

Still waiting for my whisper Dreemie 😏. Now let's all get out there and have a GOOD DAY!!

XXXOOO

you sneaks! You and monch and jeremy!
and now a comic???? hahahahahahahahaha

love to you :)

Good post on treating yourself with care instead of criticism! Food has been my weakness my entire life. Happy = eat. Sad = eat. So, I can relate. I have tried to start thinking about food as fuel for my body. If I put junk in then I will feel like junk but if I put good fuel in then, hopefully, I will feel good and operate more efficiently. Good for you that you are spreading positivity and love!

I LOVE THIS! It's the perfect way to put it!

You are most welcome, please keep those good vibes coming! We could all use more positive messages in the world.

I know I'm way way off topic, but 18 yrs ago today "Ooops! I Did it Again!! was released by Brittany Spears - lol

Now, back to your post, yes reinforcing the good habits over time has been the true solution for me.

Really? It was 18 years ago today? That's an awesome pice of trivia. Am I dating myself using that reference? Probably so 😋!

Thanks for stopping by!

Emotional eating can have huge detrimental impacts on one's health and lifestyle. Thank you for raising awareness on this issue.

Thanks for stopping by! XXXOOO

Hey Tam! I used to drink heavily as a way to cope when I had bad days or just an excuse to try and make myself feel better. Speaking from my experiences with alcohol I now know it is not the answer. And yes the same can be said for food. Great post.

Thanks for stopping by Joe! And congratulations for beating the monster!

Really something worth just repeating over and over, maybe a poster on every wall in your house. :)

Applicable to so many things that we try to change our lives but in the end just decide to quit trying to quit, that is why I like that you say "the more often you" do it gets the message across that yes you won't be able to do more than one or two blocks, but in the long term you will do a whole marathon.

It truly is about the marathon, isn't it? Changing habits is hard but we all grow and learn every day.

Baby step by baby step and when you lift your head - you're there!

I'll get to work on the poster right away 😜!
