Butch and Sundance: More On Fashion And Travel In 1900.

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in the middle of a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In the last post we were with Butch, Sundance and Etta Place while they explored New York City for three weeks.

I called it the New York Celebration because they were having a grand old time living it up on their new found stolen riches and experiencing everything the city had to offer. I like to think of them looking like this as the movie portrayed them:

Of course that's Katherine Ross who played Etta Place with Robert Redford and Paul Newman as Butch, is seated. The movie went to great lengths to attain period accurate costumes although I'm sure the men didn't wear their guns out in public. Although it's a great look!

I must admit I got a little side tracked when researching fashion and street scenes of NYC in the year 1900. I know some of my women readers really enjoy seeing what the women wore back then so here's a couple of photos I found from the year 1900.

Ladies fashion

Young lady fashions:
Is that lady on the left smoking a cigarette? Nahh surely not.

Here's a fascinating look at 5th Ave on Easter morning, 1900. I thought there would be more cars but in this photo there are only two cars. One is one the left side column near the center of the picture, do you see it? I'm not sure where the second one is but let me know if you think you see it.

That photo above is from the National Archives but they only pointed out where one of the cars were. Outrageously busy for an Easter Sunday morning. I assume everyone is heading to church? lol.

Those guys had to have had the time of their lives there in the big city but after three weeks they got ready to board a passenger liner headed to Argentina.

Those ships back then were marvels of engineering, for their time, and super elegant with no expenses spared to impress their guests who were treated like royalty.

This is not their ship but a similar one, this photo taken in 1900:

Of course since I was on the subject I had to do some research so bear with me while I talk about the ship for a second, this is a history post afterall! lol. My main curiosity was about the food.

I knew the rooms were super plush and built with many exotic woods from around the world. The craftsmanship was amazing, the rooms and furnishings were a work of art unto themselves.

The ocean liners prided themselves on matching the quality and luxury of 5 Star hotels on land. But I was thinking..ok but how do you do that in the food department with no refrigeration? Well, they didn't have the modern refrigeration systems onboard yet but they did have refrigeration.

The ships DID have refrigeration

It took TONS of ice for each voyage. Down in the lower part of the ship they had well insulated rooms and the temperature varied for each product.

One room would have birds hanging from hooks: chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigeons(yes pigeons!). Another room would be for the salted meats: hams, bacon, tongues(yes tongues! They were a very popular delicacy).

Another room was full of live fish like lobsters, crabs, clams and oysters. One would be full of sterilized milk, eggs and cream. The ship had huge fresh water tanks for the massive amounts of tea and coffee consumed.

The tea and coffee were made in ten gallon urns. And of course the alcohol... which took railroad cars to fill the amount of alcohol consumed on each trip! lol. Barrels and kegs by the hundreds.

Entertainment

Dang near everything you could find on Broadway. Orchestras, concerts, bands, dances, theater, all manner of shows and entertainment. Also indoor cricket, badminton, table tennis, shuffleboard, chess, dominoes, cribbage, card games.

No gambling officially but come on, you know those old rich boys got games going in their private rooms while the ladies attended concerts!

Ok guys, I done burned up all my space for today and will continue tomorrow when the trio lands in Argentina. What they find there is astounding.

I wish i could time travel and try on all Those layers of clothes and hats. The fashion was really high end Those days. And for a needlework mama its Nice to see all th lace and all the ruffles.
I think that time fashion was really feminin and elegant.
So thank you for reminding me of this blog i really appreciate it,
Gr.
Britt

Howdy brittandjosie! I agree, the ladies back then were extraordinarily elegant and classy in the way that they dressed. It had to take tons of work but it sure looked wonderful! Then the Roaring 20's came and they went to short hair, short skirts, much less clothings, every small hats, much more practical and fun but not elegant.
Thanks so much for getting back to me, I'm so glad you liked the photos!

Well i am a fashionista aswell for historical clothing and new fashion icons

howdy again brittandjosie! What an honor to talk to you several times so close together. A fashionista! Are the clothes from America in the 1800's and 1900 similar to those in The Neverlands at that time?

Yes it it very Nice indeed,
The clothes were similar but we didnt have the cowboy boots and hats i think but the dresses for the ladies and the corsets were there for sure, and the clothes were in Nice leather suitcases, and hatboxes. And every era had similar lines in cothing that were recognizable many years later. I visited several museums where the historical lines in seeing and cloting were visible. And even nowadays cloting pieces and also royal jewelery are inspired on earlier days.
I love it

Howdy again brittandjosie! Oh that is marvelous and interesting! So have you ever been able to try on any of the classic old dresses and hats?

No i Made an outfit once with multiple layers but other than that only in museums and on paintings

Howdy today brittandjosie! Oh I understand. Hey fashions usually come back maybe they will come back again! lol But if that happens it should only be for the winter time!

New York looked like a fun place to visit then and probably a lot cleaner than today. That was one thing that put me off when I visited a few years ago. Great for a few days ,but I could never live in a place like that.

Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! oh really, it was that bad? I have no idea. It's been years since I was there and I don't recall it being bad but it's such a huge place I'm sure some areas are fine and others not at all.

As a guy that would live in shorts and sandals, the thought of having to 'doll' up every time you left the home is tiring!!
Yes it looks smart and would have its place, but every day??
Always a great read :)

well thank you sir towjam and howdy! Are you sure you aren't just jealous of all the fancy duds and classy joints you could go to? lol...I agree with you, I have a hard time getting dressed up for anything! I feel sorry for those women back then!
Thank you sir for reading and commenting!

Howdy steem-plus! Thank you so much for the upvote!

Seeing NYC and traveling on that ship must have been quite an experience for two boys used to living rough!

Howdy again Melinda! Exactly my thoughts. Those boys spent so much time out in the wilds around a campfire with nothing but bean and more beans! lol. It had to be a total shock to them.

I'm just glad they had an opportunity to spend some of that money and have fun with it!

Man, as a low maintenance woman I would have suffered in that time period. Way too much effort to do that hair and wear those frills :)

Haha! howdy ginnyannette! I was thinking today while I was seeing all kinds of photos of that period how the dresses they wore were very elegant but my gosh what a hassle! All those layers and the dresses hitting the ground and those big hats..wow, that took alot of work. You had to be dedicated to be a woman back then!

Howdy Janton! That's a million dollar shots! The first one, but I like the rest of them too. The ship makes me think of Titanic, which came up and sunk just a few years later.

Oh and love the ladies fashion too, although I don't understand how they could stand to be dressed like that whole day, lol.

Howdy tonight Miss Lena! Oh I know, the ladies with those floor length dresses, they would be very heavy and with layers and those big hats and everything, it would take a fulltime effort just being dressed like that and to keep everything in order!

Good afternoon janton, maybe that lady had a lolly cigarette, lol. NY has always been that fabulous city and it hasn't changed. I loved NY.

ps; do you have electronic singing fish in your home janton? Haha. I have never heard of them!

Howdy today angiemitchell! oh yes, New York City is quite an amazing place, have you spent much time there?

as far as the singing fish, they are really funny, they're a silly thing that people put on their walls, well, redneck people anyway! lol.. here's one, now you can have Alexa make it sing!:

https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-amazon-alexa-singing-fish-20181129-story.html

Haha, now I know what you mean. I can say with great confidence that no singing fish will grace my walls!

We spent a couple of days only in NY in 2014, which is a far time ago now. Walked all day seeing an Such amazing number of sites. So much fun a lovely memory janton.

Howdy today angiemitchell! I agree that it is a wonderful place to explore, experience and create some memories at. Perhaps some day you'll be able to go back!

DId any of them speak Spanish? Well, Argentina, they probably would have done OK with Italian at the time...

howdy again sir fotosdenada! Good question, yes Etta Place spoke Spanish, Butch and Sundance didn't speak it at all. Really? Italian was spoken there?

There was a huge influx of Italian immigrants to the "Cono Sur" or southern part of South America in the late 1800's / early 1900's. Argentina's tango music is heavily influenced by Italian music and instrumentation. The bandoneón is an adaptation of the accordions that settlers brought with them.

howdy back sir fotosdenada! wow that is interesting indeed! I love steemit for having such smart people on here! lol.
