Part 2: Johnson Searches For His Family In Indian Territory

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas! I started a short story yesterday about a black slave in North Texas who was a cowboy in 1864 when his son was killed and his wife and two young daughters were kidnapped by a Kiowa War Party.

The reason I wanted to do this story is because the cowboy, Britt Johnson, is black, was a slave, was a full time cowboy running a ranch, and he demonstrated extraordinary courage and resolve in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Hollywood messes up another story

It's amazing that Hollywood and TV has ignored the black cowboy role in founding the Old West. In fact, while I was researching this story and wondering why it hadn't been made into a movie I found out that it HAD been.

Yeah, but in true Hollywood fashion at the time, they took a great story and refashioned it in their vision. In this instance they of course had to have a white man play the main role! In this case it was John Wayne.

The movie was made in 1956 and is called The Searchers. It's one of his most well known movies and was directed by the great John Ford. But in the movie the hero was searching for his niece who had been kidnapped not by Kiowa but by Comanches.

Here's a screen shot from The Searchers:

I have nothing against John Wayne, he was a great American but I think the real story is much more dramatic and compelling. Anyway, that's just an interesting tidbit I discovered about Johnson's story. The movie is a good one though.

Okay, now back to Britt Johnson. After his wife and daughters were taken in the fall of 1864 he stayed home during the winter, obviously preparing for his search come Springtime.

What would you do?

That is so hard to imagine, just having to wait around, isn't it? I mean, I don't know about you but I'd be like..Dying time's here! As I cleaned and loaded my guns. He's lost EVERYTHING.

But then hopefully I'd have people stop me and remind me that if I got killed I wouldn't be able to ever rescue my family!

Johnson gathered supplies and weaponry in the Spring and set out, BY HIMSELF. He had a Henry lever action rifle, 2 six shooters and other supplies, probably some valuable stuff for trading.

Here's the type Henry rifle he used, it held 16 shots so that was the best rifle money could buy at the time:

He searched the reservations as well as settlements in the open country.

At this time most tribes were supposed to be on reservations but with the army fighting in the Civil War this left the Western Territories mostly without soldiers, so the tribes took advantage of the situation to go off the reservation, many of them continuing to fight.

It was a very perilous time to be traveling alone, especially into Indian lands alone. I'm sure he was advised against it by everyone he knew. It wasn't long before he met a Comanche on the trail and they rode together. Then it wasn't long before that Comanche met up with others and Johnson rode with them too.

Comanche war party. Thank God he was friends with them.

He became friends with them and they let him travel around the territory undisturbed. I think they admired his courage. He would search for months and then go back home. Then he would head back out.

His trips back and forth were numerous but he finally found his family with the Kiowa. Luckily his Comanche friends helped him with the negotiations because the Kiowa were very difficult to deal with, very "wily" would be a good way to put it.

One chief of the Comanche by the name of Esihabitu became a major part of the negotiations and made the release happen. I'm sure there were a lot of goods exchanged also.

In an interesting side note, this chief became very well known around the country because he was one of the chiefs who were escorted to Washington, D.C. to see the city and meet with the president. You can imagine his shock when he saw the bustling city and infrastructure?

Because of this trip he went back home and convinced his nation to end their war with the whites, which had gone on for about 40 years.

Here's his photo:

It took over a year and who knows how many miles ridden and ordeals suffered but Johnson finally had his wife and daughters back, thanks to his relentless drive and the help of his Comanche friends.

After a time Johnson and two of his black friends formed one of the few black companies back then, a freight hauling company. And they were good at it, they were succeeding. This in itself was amazing because at that time after the Civil War blacks were greatly discriminated against. But these guys went ahead and did their own thing.

The ambush

However...in a cruel twist of fate...one day while they were taking a wagon train load of goods across Texas they were attacked by a war party of Kiowa. It was estimated that there were 25 of them.

Johnson and his two friends were all killed. When another wagon train came upon the scene Johnson's body was found near his horse which was dead, he had used his horse as a shield to fire his rifle behind. They found an amazing 173 rifle bullet casings around Johnson, he had put up a heroic fight to the death.

I was also surprised that the war party only had 25 warriors. Johnson and his friends had to have taken their toll but the warriors were not driven off so they were fearless as well. Remarkable.

Wow, I can't imagine what nerves of steel you would have to have to fight like that. It's quite a bit different these days to war from continents away, never seeing the eyes of your enemies. Awesome story, as usual!

Howdy tonight tamaralovelace! Oh I know..but I think it would be so scary that you would fight like a wildman or curl up and cry like a baby and just be paralyzed. I found a great painting done by a Texas artists that beautifully depicts Johnson's last stand using his horse as a shield but I didn't want to use it without permission, I emailed them but they haven't gotten back to me, it would have been perfect to use.
thanks so much for reading and commenting!

You should be in charge of getting that movie made the right way! At least then it could be historically factual. I suppose history did not keep track of what happened to the wife and daughters. I can't imagine the trauma they must have gone through.

Oh yeah, it was a nightmare experience for the women. Well nowdays they would make the movie with a black cowboy, I think. But Westerns are so rare these days. Two years ago they made Hostiles which was brutally accurate I guess, haven't seen it yet, and showed both sides committing atrocities. It's true, I haven't seen what happened to the wife and daughters. If I was them I'd move to a city!

I'm tempted to do a series about the Parker kidnapping where they took several women and the one stayed with them most of her life, one of her Indian children grew up to be a great Commanche Chief.
thanks so much for your comments!

I think I will pass on Hostiles. I do okay if I have to read about those things in a book because I can control the images in my head. I don't want to see it on the TV or movie screen.

That is a beautiful painting. The artist really captured the movement well.

I understand about the Hostiles movie, that's the way Mrs. J is too. I've read so much blood curdling things and ways they tortured people for days that the movie probably wouldn't be too much for me. Most people that go to movies are a little numb I think.
Thanks for going back and checking out that painting though! I had a real good one done by a Texas artist that depicted Johnson's last stand behind his fallen horse and I asked the artist's office if I could use it and they haven't gotten back to me. It was super cool.

Good for you for trying to get permission to show that painting. I always wonder how those kind of permissions work and when you really are required to have them. It's easier just to use my own photos and then I don't have to worry about it.

I have always avoided horror movies, and I really dislike movies with excessive violence. I like living alone in the woods and it has always seemed rather silly to try to scare myself! When I hear someone walking around on my back deck in the middle of the night I just assumed that it's a deer or a raccoon.

For whatever reason it's different when I read it. No suspenseful music and if suddenly it's too horrific I can quickly turn the page.

I totally understand Melinda. Me and Mrs. J are with you on the horror movies too and especially almost all of them these days have a demonic theme to them that just ain't healthy to be dwelling on!

Yeah on the photos if it's a common one that everybody has on facebook or pinterest I don't worry about it, or if it's from a historic site or wikipedia those are all public photos and legal to use. This one was different because I'd never seen it before and they listed his name and studio and said unauthorized use was prohibited so I wasn't going to take a chance.

However, since his studio is only about 25 or 30 minutes away and he knows I'm a local guy that like Western art then he might let me use his art. I told him I would give out his site address and give him credit, he has some awesome Western scenes. So maybe I'll hear from them and can use his paintings in the future.

Morning janton, what a remarkable man!

Tell me janton, surely a redneck is not that silly!

People tend to beleive what Hollywood puts out is true. Its a movie so it has to be true LOL

howdy sir wolfhart! yes sir and sometimes they get it right. Just don't ask me to remember which time! lol. how's it going and have you posted this week?

I have made a post every day

I can’t complain. Things are moving along

howdy again sir wolfhart! Oh a post everyday? Dang. ok well I'll go over there and see what's going on.

You must be getting pounded by snow today

Pretty sad story, but I suppose that's the way things were back then.

As for the gas tank fix... I saw a Jeep once, with one of those trailer-hitch luggage racks loaded up with four huge gas cans, all hooked into the fuel line. I wouldn't want to see that get rear-ended!

haha! howdy sir fotosdenada! I'm laughing at the image of the gas cans rigged to the fuel line, a true redneck job! Yes it was a sad story but the area was so dangerous out there that I wouldn't want to go anywhere unless I was in a large, well armed group, and I'd stay in the middle! but hey as far as the story, at least he got his family back so they could carry on.

That's a great story how he got his wife and daughters back after searching for so long! Regarding that gas tank... it looks a bit unsafe but if you add some duct tape to strap it down real good you should be ok.

ahaha! yes sir the duct tape will fix anything and make it ok! lol. Yes that was kind of a bitter sweet story there, some people don't like it and think it's too sad but hey, that's history for you.

It's true what you said about the Hollywood movie as well. I love the Duke, but they should have had a black man play the part of Johnson and kept true to the real story. Well done, great writing!

thank you sir keithboone! Well sir...I think they should redo the movie and tell the actual story, I think these days they would use a black man for the part. Denzel Washington would be perfect.

That guy is perfect for any part!

yes sir he sure is, in fact, I can't even remember a movie that he starred in that was bad. I thought the remake he was in a couple years ago of The Magnificent Seven was super good. Maybe because it was the first Western made in about 25 years! lol.

Oh yeah... and I meant to say that I would enjoy hearing about the Parker kidnapping. I don't believe I know anything about that at all.

It's a wild story. I mean to be captured and then have your have Indian kid grow up to be a famous chief is unreal. After she'd been with them most of her life she was taken back to white civilization and she hated it.
Unfortunately I don't have a book about that one, I've looked but the last time I couldn't find it, it's out there I just need to look again. It's great because most of the book is written by her if I remember right and you get to see the good and the bad of both the Indians and the whites. It would probably get some people highly upset with me. lol.

Truth can be a dangerous thing! I would love to hear her story.

I'll look for it again, the internet is so amazing, if it's out there it usually shows up!

I hope you find it! It sounds like a great story!

Howdy again Melinda! yeah I have to go online and look again. I do have a book by a lady who was in that same compound and was taken captive when the other lady was taken who lived with the Comanche for 24 years but this lady that I have a book about was 17 and pregnant. She was ransomed for after 21 months. The only reason I hesitate about doing these kinds of stories is that they make the Indians look really bad! lol.
They did umimaginable things but it was normal for them. We can't comprehend them and they can't comprehend us. If I did a story like this I would have to do that story about the group up your way, I forget the tribe but someone put up a big statue of their leader in honor of him and you did that was in one of your posts?

Chief Blackhawk and the Blackhawk War. Zachary Taylor , Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln all fought in that war. I've got some pictures that you could use of various monuments and historical markers if you ever do want to put that story together. My favorite book that I have found about that era is called Along the Blackhawk Trail by William F Stark. It is out of print, but used copies are available on Amazon.

oh does that book tell the story of Chief Blackhawk and his people? If I do a story about how bad the Indians treated people then I need to do a story about how bad the government treated the Indians..I think. well I'll google "the Blackhawk War" and see what comes up. thanks so much, you are so full of helpful information!

Yup, nice story. Certainly movie material. Maybe in time to come, they will make another movie of it, this time with a black man in the lead.

howdy sir Vincent! yes sir I agree. Do a remake and do it right this time. These days they'd have a black man do the part, no problem. I nominate Denzel Washington. Oh and they'll also need some people to get slaughtered in that raid, are you up for it? lol. Shouldn't be too hard to act like you're terrified and getting killed. Hey sir Vincent I always ask you what kind of wild thing you're doing for the weekend and you never do a dang thing exciting. I suppose this weekend is no different? Well if it's the same thing then join the club because I ain't doing a dang thing exciting either! lol.

Nah... if I showed up at the set, they would replace the lead with me.

Well, you keep asking the same question, so you keep getting the same answer. Anyway, I have to live up to my reputation of giving laid-back new meaning. What is your excuse?
You want to come over and hang out with me? We can have a couple of drinks and listen to some country music. How's that? :-)

haha! Sir Vincent! My excuse is that I'm spending all my time on steemit but I think that will change sometime in the near future but I'd love to come over and hang out with you and have some drinks, maybe walk around town and see some sights. Do you like country music? You're just teasing right? lol. I like laid back, that's the way I am too. Mrs. J is type A and always has to be doing something and I'm whatever the laid back type is and I can lay on the couch all day watching movies or football and it don't bother me a bit! lol.

Howdy @janton. Do you think we hang well together (pardon the pun), and not end up killing each other? You have to move fast though. Better do it while I can still walk. At my age, I don't even buy green bananas. :-D
Yes, I like country music. Does that surprise you? :-)

Howdy sir Vincent! You lost me about the green bananas...because you don't have time to wait for them to ripen? lol. the country music thing...yes a little surprised. I figured that it would be very foreign or opposite of your music over there but then I have no idea what your music sounds like so I'm just guessing.

Do you have any favorite artists or just whoever is playing and where do you listen to it on, online or do they have country stations over there? surely not! lol.

If I buy green bananas, I might die before they ripen. It's a joke. :-)

I listen to all sorts of music, as long as they are listenable. But I like oldies best. These days I listen mostly to the music online. Actually, I don't listen to a lot of music now. I prefer the peace and quiet.
No, I don't have a favourite artist.

What about you? :-)

I don't have time to listen to much music, used to because I spent alot of time driving around for work. I like many of the old classic country singers like Johhny Cash but I like newer ones too Garth Brooks is one of my favorites. I do like peace and quiet too but I also like talk radio when I have a chance.
Is your weekend as boring as you wanted it to be? lol.

What were you doing before if you don't mind my asking.

I was only beginning to listen to English songs during the end of Johnny Cash era. So, I am not very familiar with him. Garth Brooks yes, but he doesn't seem to be on the scene any more. I think Blake Shelton replaced him.

Yes, my weekend was as boring as I want it to be. Hope yours too. :-)
