The Belle Starr Story: Tragedy Strikes Again

in #history5 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're continuing with the story of Belle Starr who was branded "The Bandit Queen" after her many successful robberies in the Old West.

In the last post we left off with Belle shining in the Fort Smith fair as the leader of a mock stagecoach robber and also gave a shooting and riding exhibition which showcased her prowess in those skills.

This had to be the highlight of her life because in reading through all the material and articles about her the one thing that was strikingly unique about her as a young girl and then into adulthood was her passion of riding and shooting. In fact, her father lamented that it was the only thing she was interested in.

Sam's old man gets slapped

Belle and Sam hung around in Fort Smith for awhile after the Fair because Sam's father Tom was in jail for running moonshine. The law had been after him for years and finally caught him on two occasions selling whiskey so Sam and Belle were there to offer any help they could.

Tom pleaded guilty to the charges so there was nothing they or his lawyers could do to help and he was sentenced to 1.5 years in the Federal Penitentiary by Judge Parker.

After the sentencing Belle and Sam went back home but Sam was depressed, bitter and angry. He blamed his old nemisis, the Indian policeman John West and his brother Frank, for the punishment of his father.

Not much compassion

Personally I find it a little hard to feel any compassion for the old man or for Sam. Tom Starr had murdered more men than anyone knew for sure but at least 20, and enjoyed himself while he did it.

If you remember from earlier posts he used to wear a necklace made of the earlobes of the men he had murdered. So this was like a slap on the wrist compared to all the crimes he'd committed.

Nevertheless, Sam was royally pissed off and ranted about gettin even with John West. In an effort to calm him down and get his mind off the situation Belle suggested they go to a dance that a lady in the area was putting on.

Here is a drawing of Sam Starr, I don't believe he ever had his photo taken:

It was the middle of December and dang cold with sleet. Belle and Sam arrived and Belle was asked to play the organ with the lady of the house so they started belting out lively dance tunes and people were dancing and having a good time, Sam sat near the organ close to the front door.

Here comes trouble

The hosts had built a log fire in front of their property and guests coming into the drive were warming themselves at that fire and everything was hunky dory.

Here is the only known photo of the Indian lawman John West, the dude looks like he's about 7 feet tall doesn't he?

Until John West shows up. He goes up to the fire to warm himself up and one of the guests warns him that Sam Starr is in the house and that he should leave to avoid any trouble. Well, West said he couldn't do that because it would look like he was afraid and that he "would run from no man."

About that time Sam came out of the house and accused West of shooting Belle's horse Venus and the two started yelling at each other.

Belle is widowed again

They both drew their pistols and Sam shot first hitting West in the chest, a mortal wound, and he staggered but regained his footing long enough to fire a shot at Sam and then fell dead. His shot hit Sam in the chest who staggered forward ten feet and then he too fell dead.

One witness said that when West showed up someone told Belle who whirled around to Sam and said "Go down and get that son-of-a-bitch!" And kept playing.

When the gunfire erupted she stopped playing and everyone went to the front door, Belle knelt down and cradled Sam's head in her lap. Witnesses said she was white but shed no tears...and cursed John West.

For those of you following this series you'll remember that Belle's first husband, Reed, was also a wanted man and was killed by a Sheriff's Deputy so that's two in a row meeting the exact same fate.

I wonder what a psychiatrist would have diagnosed all these people with. I’m guessing Borderline Personality Disorder for Belle.

howdy sir madgoat! I'm sure you're right, she was very contradictory in her behavior. Is Borderline Personality Disorder like Multiple Personalities? Sounds like you know about this stuff too, you know someone?

All my girlfriends have borderline personality disorder. It is risky behavior, mixed with hysteria, innability to take responsibility for one's actions, falling deeply in love quickly only to burn the relationship down at the first sign of trouble. Take all that and pour napalm on it.

It sounds like you've had some fiery relationships! But that was in the past right? Your wife is not that bad.

I've been stabbed with a pair of scissors, had a girl try to run me over, punched, kicked, bit... But the sex is always great.
Mrs. Goat is bi-polar. What can I say, I know how to pick em.

haha! man sir madgoat I probably shouldn't be laughing but that is amazing. The bi-polar thing, is there medication for that or is it not very severe?

Back in those days in that specific area society was different even if there was "law and order", so to some extent, it was more "dog eat dog", back then, people became products of their environment to another level,
it's hard to diagnose with the labels of today or so I think?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder might be more fitting compared with borderline personality disorder, but what do i know...

Im not a psychologist or anything, did study some psychology...

Howdy sir friendly-fenix! yeah I don't know either but you are probably right in your suggestion. It would be interesting for an experienced shrink to assess Belle's condition or personality quirks or damages or traits. Thanks for your imput sir fenix!

She got some bad luck with hubbys. Dude does look ten feet tall and bullet proof tho lol

haha! yes sir enginewitty and she might not be done with going through husbands! lol. very funny comment, thanks!

Morning janton, that was a sudden and dramatic ending to Sam Starr!

No redneck jokes today janton?

howdy again angiemitchell! well, when I've had a sad post before people have commented that a joke doesn't go well after a sad one so I thought I'd not put one on here but I don't know if this post rates that level of sadness or not.

I see what you mean janton, always hard to predict people's reactions. Better to err on the side of caution.

yes Ma'am angiemitchell I believe that and I believe that is wisdom.

I thought Belle respected John West? Was I mistaken? And if she did, it made no sense for her to ask here hubby to go take care of him. mm...?

howdy sir Vincent! no, the only lawman that Belle ever respected was a Deputy named Tyner Hughes because he rode right up to her cabin and talked to her very politely and respectfully, and then when Sam turned himself in Belle sent for Deputy Hughes to come and escort him to town.
But she hated John and Frank West for chasing her husband around for years and John was the head of the posse where that deputy insulted her and she drew her gun but John grabbed it away from her and that was her favority Ivory handled pistol she called her baby, and he stole it and never gave it back.. then Frank West shot her beloved horse Venus.
thanks for asking the question sir Vincent and thanks for reading!

Ah! Thanks for the clarification @janton. I got the characters mixed-up. I follow your story everyday, just that there were already so many comments, and there was nothing else to add. :-)

howdy today sir Vincent! oh I totally understand and thank you for following along in this wacky series! lol. It is much appreciated.

West sure looks tall and healthier than Sam~ most folks in those days were much smaller than us well fed ones of today.
Belle must have had a difficult home-life with her outlaw husbands..if there ever was a quiet evening at home! U&R

ha! howdy today redheadpei! Very good observation. Well, I think that Sam was gone and on the run so much of the time that they didn't have much of a home life but Sam was six feet tall and his father, Tom, was 6 ft 5 inches so he was really huge for that time period, they were both unusually tall and it looks like West had to have been way taller also.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

Well, she definitely knew how to pick 'em!

haha! so true fotosdenada and just wait until her next pick, you'll really like the next one! lol.

Wow. No more Sam. Poor Belle. Big changes ahead for her now without the man she loved? !tip

oh thank you for the tip Melinda! Yes Ma'am she if facing some big challenges now but at least she won't have someone who the law is always chasing and who didn't look like he would ever change!

She does have poor taste in men!

haha! howdy Melinda! you are early today again, well I know it's not early for you to start on steemit but for to be talking to me! lol. Anyway yes she does and just wait for her next pick!! lol.

I popped in and out a few times in between doing a few chores around the house. Now I'm ready to put my feet up and do a little Steemin!

howdy again today Melinda! wow so you have from now until midnight to be on steemit? Well at that pace you can set some records! lol.

Ha! So far all I've got done is a little curating! Time to make a comment or two!

howdy again Melinda! Well rememver you're trying to keep up with bots now so you need to do at least 100 today! lol.
