A Halloween Without Pumpkins and Costumes

in #life5 years ago (edited)

Although some, Americans or not, are celebrating Halloween all over the world tricking and treating and wearing spooky costumes I and my friend chose to do something different. Went on a short road trip to a small town in the vicinity of ours that is actually a thermal spa town which to our surprise was full of tourists even on Halloween. It's the town of Hercules( Baile Herculane ) and it's wearing its name due to an old story telling that "once upon a time" Hercules lived there to recover himself after some sort of a battle that he had and he healed his wounds and recovered there thanks to the springs of thermal water that are to be found in some places around the town. We didn't had any wounds to heal but it was very relaxing to have a bath.

Thus the town was given the name Baile Herculane which in English could be translated as Hercules Baths. Now, I'm not that good at history and I won't get into too much details about Hercules so I will jump to my story. The trip that resulted in tens of pictures, some of them being shared in here also, came out of the blue the day before yesterday when I was walking and talking with my friend. She asked what do I have in mind to celebrate Halloween and I just answered that I don't do that so we can do something else. And so we did. We drove to Hercules town and stopped first to take our shares of thermal water( about half an hour) which was very relaxing but it melted us down soon after getting out of the water That's the part I don't like about thermal baths. However we regained our energy quick and started exploring the area a bit that has a small stream in which you can get straight into once you get out of the thermal baths if you have the gut to do that. We didn't had. We just took pics and selfies and energized a bit before continuing the road trip.

A one way road that took us to the thermal baths spot

Then we took the car and drove uphill to please our sight with the scenery of a bumpy twisted road that's definitely a must if you're around. However, the bumpy twisted road in some places gave us the change to admire the river Cerna which is actually way bigger than the stream that we were near in the pics from the thermal baths which is actually the same. Somehow it lost some of the volume on the road. It is actually an affluent of the Danube and it brims over in Danube right at the entrance of my hometown. I have shared the area in my fishing stories a few months ago so if you read those you have definitely seen that too. The road is pretty long and as pleasant it was to drive on it and take photos at almost every kilometer we decided to turn around and go home. However it was a great experience and one heck of a Halloween. At least that's what we feel like. What about you, do you celebrate Halloween?

The peaks, the air and that water made me want to live there, at least for a few years

Nice, @acestontop.

I can't think of something better to do on Halloween than to get out of the house, and do some adventuring, especially to a place called Hercule's Baths! Who wouldn't want the road all to themselves, too.

My wife and I visited a hot springs in Mexico several years ago. I remember it being a very pleasant experience. They were indoor (different cave openings, I think), so we had the spot to ourselves for a period of time.

I don't remember the drop in energy afterward, but then, we weren't really going to be doing much after that, anyway. I'd like to go to another one sometime.

re: Halloween

I try not to do anything related to Halloween, either, now that our kids are grown, married, and starting their own families. I've never really liked the idea behind it, but I know a lot of people are into it. I figure, let them do it, and I'll just stay out of the way.

We do end up eating dinner out. We started doing that about 10 years ago, and have mainly eaten Chinese food. I don't know why, just that it ended up that way. Especially the last few years.

I'm glad you were able to enjoy your adventure and share it with us.

Congratulations on the curie, too.

I never considered Halloween as a holiday. It is an invention to somehow celebrate "the bad and the ugly" and to subconsciously make people buy more things like costumes and sweets. Something like Christmas but not that "holy". I find it awkward that it is spread all over the world, but Thanksgiving Day was not borrowed by any other country. Somehow we are taking from the US only the weird things and habits that are not useful, healthy or harmonious. I for example would like to see in my country being celebrated the Thanksgiving Day rather than Halloween. I would like to see children being grateful rather than wearing ugly costumes.

Very much in agreement on Thanksgiving and Halloween, even though we've widely managed to turn that into about the food. In our family, we've done some things here and there over the years to bring out the "Thanks" part, but I'm not sure we can call it a tradition. Maybe we can come up with something for the grand kids.

Halloween is just an odd thing to me. As you say, celebrating the bad and the ugly, which is probably putting it mildly. But since it's watered down and aimed to the kids, it's okay. Doesn't make sense.

Oh I love the place!
I guess you save some money by not buying those pumpkins and costumes.
And its more worth relaxing spending time in nature.
It adds life I guess?
And by the way you're a perfect couple!

I usually don't celebrate Halloween and we're actually not a couple, but thanks for your appreciation and for stopping by to share your thoughts. Have a great day!

Oh I thought you were couple, sorry for that.
Anyways thanks for spending your precious time replying on my comments. I appreciate it very much.
And congrats on @curie upvote!
Enjoy your day!

Thank you also for spending your time to comment.

You're very much welcome!
By the way, from where are you if you don't mind?
The scenes you'd taken in your photos are all beautiful.

A small town in Romania.

Oh Romania.
My pleasure talking to you!
Looking forward on your next post.
Have a great day!

Thanks. My next post has just arrived :)

Great photo collection of your trip to Hercules, you seem to be having a lot of fun with your friend =).

Congratulations on your first curie vote. Stay active and keep posting on Steemit and you might get another in the future :).

We didn't had any wounds to heal but it was very relaxing to have a bath.

I had to laugh! Yes, the stream is so tempting for a bath or even just to play with the refreshing water.

You actually have a very nice way of spending Halloween because I also do not do those trick or treat games. Your road trip seems a very cool short adventure.

How long was the drive to Hercules Baths? You mentioned about tourists. Are people allowed to camp or at least have picnics along the bank?

It takes about half an hour to get to the town and some more to actually get to that area. It wasn't too long but it was good. There isn't too much place around to camp but it is allowed. However now it is cold there and in summer there are vipers. There are plenty of guest houses and hotels for the ones that do not live in the area.

Vipers! That's scary...

Oh, okay. With the guest houses and hotels, it means the area is really a tourist spot I suppose.

Simply a great awesone adventure through the road bath and the scenic jungle. Why to spend the day as halloween when we have such natures beauty around.....halloween costume and staying at home...it is better to be halloweeen mood and look out for some freaky creature through these kind of small adcenture...thanks for sharing some cool scenic beauty....for sure you enjoyed it lot.....steem on

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comments. Have a great day!

I would trade my Halloween party experience for that adventure. The place looks relaxing and will do good for people that needs some de-stress their lives.

Indeed it was a nice day.

This is a perfect celebration of Halloween! We do not celebrate and we tend to miss the Halloween weekend :D This year I knew about it as all Steemit was full with this theme, so it was impossible to miss.

I didn't know that there is story that Hercules lived in Romania. Very interesting :) It's nice to have a place named after him.

And yes, we can see who is the selfie person :)

Thank you for sharing! It was a pleasure to join you on your tour :)

Thanks. I don't know if Hercules really lived in here but that's the story of the town's name and sometimes you feel like believing in stories. At least a small town in Romania wears his name.

Lovely pictures I must say.

I don't celebrate Halloween, but some of my countrymen do celebrate it as if they were real Americans.

I have spent it in my house working, but if I had chosen I would have chosen the same as you, an outdoors somewhere with beautiful views.

What a beautiful halloween you've been through, I would have stayed in the hot springs, but if you have to come out good no way. hahahahahaha.

Very nice graphics, here in Venezuela there is no fall, but I would like to take nice photographs in those landscapes full of yellow and ochre tones.

Greetings and thank you for sharing your infernal journey, ;)

Thank you also for sharing your thoughts. It's been a late autumn with close to 20°C during the day and even more in some days. When I was a child though autumns were much more cold.
