Cloudflare Introduces Fast & Secure DNS @ 1.1.1.1
Cloudflare releases new DNS servers that promise speed and privacy.
If you are still using your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) DNS, you are using something that likely logs all your traffic, possibly injects adware/malware/tracking, and is almost certainly slow. Even using Google DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) is a big improvement than the DNS provided by your ISP.
If privacy isn't your concern, Cloudflare's new DNS promises to considerably faster than even Google DNS, and not just by a small amount. Performance improvement averages over 200% faster.
Configuring a device to use Cloudflare's new DNS is really easy, just set your DNS to 1.1.1.1 with a secondary of 1.0.0.1.
Cloudflare launched this new service on April 1st, but it is no April Fools Day joke. I've already switched over and the difference is noticeable.

This is very interesting. I'd like to give it a shot, but to be honest I trust my ISP who I pay more than a free service like Cloudflare or Google for DNS.
If the model is free, you (ie your data) are more than likely the product.
Right at the very top of the product page Cloudflare says, "We will never sell your data". They don't say share.
Also note, that "we" is also quite subjective as they received over $100M in investments from partners like Google and Microsoft in late 2015. As heavy investors are those companies already part of the "we"?
We are in the era of oversharing and privacy erosion. There are lots of semantics and word play angles going on with free services to collect your data .
I would put money on the table saying your ISP will be spying and sharing your data.
Very possible. I know my ISP specifically has terms that they do not.
My point is that anyone using a free DNS service should not expect their privacy or browsing records to be locked down and never shared. If you don't care and just want speed I'm sure Cloudflare and Goog are decent options.
If you want speed and privacy you're better off paying for a repuatable DNS service with an air tight privacy policy. ;)

Go ahead and trust blindly and use terms like "likely". I'll continue to dig deep and read the fine print.
I said likely because I believe 99.9% ISP log, but I didn't want to say 100%
Thanks for relaying this information on. I have started using https://pi-hole.net/ on a raspberrypi in my home for DNS.
I used Pi.hole for a while, you can use this DNS on the Pi.Hole.
But I couldn't stand pi hole for long, had a lot of problems and didn't remove youtube ads and I had to white list stuff far more than I liked. Nothing beats uBlock Origin for ad-blocking ability.
I'm working on setting it up on a non pi linux platform. What are you running it on?
I used Pi Raspbian and Debian without problems.
Hmm, maybe I'll just set up a different VM in the hypervisor to run the pi-hole on then. I was attempting to setup up on my main Centos VM and it was giving me issues. The default security profile doesn't like it.
I am using a pi 2b. Currently I am using the DNS but not the DHCP function. I am currently considering whether to switch the DHCP functionality from the router to the pihole. Currently my D-Link router does not offer a lot of flexibility. The model that I have does not allow DD-WRT.
Actually the router that I have is a Linksys not a D-Link.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't quite follow. Changing your DNS affects your Internet speed and privacy? How do you even change DNS settings? And if I go install Cloudfare's thing, will it do all of that by itself?
It only speeds up how fast you can resolve hostnames to their IP address (something that has to be done with almost every new connection).
It helps in privacy as anyone who sees your DNS queries knows where you go on the Internet. It won't give you access to passwords or anything like that, but it can build a decent profile about a person.

I have been using Cloudflare for all my websites for a while now and could not be happier with their free service. I am just hearing about their DNS now and will look in to this further. Thanks for the info!
