Ghent festivities 2018 day 1
Preface
After 365 days of counting down, it was yesterday so far back and the 10 day festival started again.
While on the second day we all hope that the Belgian football team will win its last match on the World Cup.
As usual, the 'Ghent parties' started with the opening drink in the town hall, where the mayor hands over the keys of the city to the party mayor for 10 days. And then the bellsman started the 'Gentse feesten'.
While we will all be letting the beer flow for 10 days on the streets of Ghent, we will all enjoy the 10 day cultural festival. And several of the visitors will see 'pink elephants' through the frequent use of liquor.
The 10 day festival started with a beautiful opening act of The Lords of Lightening and the Ghent dragon spat fire for the first time in 200 years .
And we are all welcomed the next morning by the most famous sisters of Ghent.

What a way to start the party. The mayor's tie?! Is there a story to that one?
I am rooting for Belgium today, hopefully you have even more to celebrate after the game.

I understand, but the real mayor seems to have a rope, to hang him, instead of a tie. Looks creepy :)
it is the symbol of the city, we were instructed by 'karel the big one' because we did not pay city taxes in the Middle Ages
