DIY Sunday Plumbing

Burst pipe

Our Sunday was going ok until my son was bored and he told me he wanted to help me weed the grasses at the back of the compound near the fence, I felt it was a great idea so I gave him permission to go and do it. After about 10 minutes he ran to me looking very worried, I thought he had injured himself but I couldn’t see anything that shows that. He then told me he didn’t know there was a water pipe at the back as he was using the hoe it hit it and the pipe burst and that water was gushing out.

I was very relieved it was only a burst pipe and made him to understand it was ok and that he should calm down so that he can help me fix it. I first turned off the main water source at the borehole end. I don’t blame the kid because I can’t remember how the water pipes went at the back of the compound because that is where the old house is and all the pipes are laid underground. I couldn’t get any plumber to come fix it because Sunday is not normally a working day. Turning off the main water supply means that water isn’t supplied to the main house and we can’t stay a day without water supply. So it means we had to find a solution today.

Here Comes Super Ken – That’s Me Lol

Work tools and materials

I got some of the tools and materials like super glue, old pipe and others I felt I will need to patch up the pipe though I didn’t use them all. I cleaned up the pipe, cut a piece from the old pipe I saw laying around somewhere in the compound and rubbed the super glue on it. I placed it over the hole that was created by the hoe and held it for some time. By the time I removed my hands the piece of pipe had stick to the burst pipe.

I wasn’t done yet I also taped the patched pipe with a black sticker tape so that it will hold the patch the more. After taping it I left it for some time so that everything holds very strongly.

Next step was to cover the place with sand and then put on the main water source. I am happy to say we did a great job my assistant which is my son and I super Ken that’s me. Lol.

Very clever fix, using item found around your home. I love that you showed your son how to fix the pipe. My Dad was always fixing things himself when I was kid. Often he would have us help him, because of that experience, I try to fix things myself. I figure if it is already broken worst case scenario it will still be broken, best case it works again!

I think it's a great thing to let kids learn. At 10 he does a lot for me these days and enjoys doing them. I also want him to be able to manage on his own as he grows so that he's not always dependent on me or others. Thanks for your comment.

I agree was the same with my son. He also learned a lot from Dad. In fact he followed in his footstep, becoming a Mechanical Engineer. My Mom was delight at this commenting, now Dad can talk to some one who actually will understand what he is talking about!
