Market Friday in UAE

in #marketfriday5 years ago (edited)

Its another fabulous friday again and i am glad to participate at #marketfriday by @dswigle. Friday is the start of the weekend in the middle east (weekdays start thru Sunday-Thursday).

Here is a typical market in a shopping mall in UAE (United Arab Emirates). Shopping malls are usually pack up during weekend.

This are tropical vegetables imported from neighboring countries such as India, Bangladesh, oman etc.

String beans, Bitter gourd, Sponge gourd and Drumsticks

A bread fruits, fresh corn and tomatoes with locally grown cucumber.

How many of you knows red bananas? I know there are lots of varieties of banana but i have never known a red banana until recently. I think this type of banana is from india, but i am not sure if it's only used for cooking.

And an aisle's of fruits...

Just before the counter, there is a designated area for tiny plants and bouquet of flowers. They are a bit pricey so it is best to buy it in the local nursery.

UAE has a wide access of fruits and mostly all sorts of vegetables. Though this is not a traditional souq (market), its still the best to shop here as this is close to our house and is probably the same price in a traditional market. Saves us from gasoline :)

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Have you tried a red banana, if so, does it use for cooking or you can you eat it is?

Thank you.

What an awesome market! Are those red bananas edible? I have seen them in Central America, but there no one was eating them. I was told that if the birds were not touching them, then they were not good to eat. Also, how do you call those green-purple beans! I haven't seen those!

I think its edible, its on the supermarket shelf but i am not sure how they consume it. And that purple like snow peas are from india, i don't know what its called. It is a tropical vegetable but I don't see them in the philippines. I thjnk they are native from india.

Thank you so much for the visit. Xx

Red bananas are edible @sherylneil , @lymepoet . They are consumed just like any other banana. The ripe ones have a very sweet and mushy texture. No idea about those purple peas though 😊

Hi, Sheryl! @sherylneil The red banana is native to India (usually) or southeast Asia.

You can eat them, just as they are, but, if they are not ripe enough, they taste like chalk! if they are ripe enough to eat, they tend to have a thick, dark red peel and the inside is off-white and the flesh of the fruit is on the soft side. It has a sweet flavor and has a raspberry taste to it.

I would have to say that it is used more in baking than eating off the tree.

t is preferred as a baking variety for both desserts and semi-savory dishes. In dessert preparations, complimentary pairings include apples, stonefruit, berries such as strawberries and blueberries, citrus, lemongrass, cream, yogurt and mint. Within savory dishes, complimentary pairings include cream, chiles, pork, chicken, black beans, limes, mango, pineapple and nuts such as cashews and hazelnuts.

I hope this helps! I like them, but, they are not always available here in the United States, but, have had many opportunities to have them in South America.

Thank you so much for showing off your market in the UAE! So many wonderful fruits and veggies! And yes! I buy my plants at the nursery also. So much cheaper! Have a wonderful weekend!
