Present and accounted for...

in #motivation5 years ago

Finding presence is a task I set myself in life, every day of it. Presence, in the context I mean here, is the act of being within each and every moment, really there, 100 percent! I’ve found it allows for better engagement with the task and activity or person I am with which, of course, extends to myself; Being present when it comes to oneself is just as important as when with other people.

Today I’ve had one of those days that got away from me; No matter how hard I tried to keep it on the rails I’d set for the day it ran off and on a tangent. It was frustrating and unproductive. Well, not totally unproductive, but not as efficient as I would have liked and the results I harvested were diminished because of it. The day is not over yet however I needed to get away and find some presence within myself, to hit the pause button of life and bring myself back to a more centred position from which to launch the rest of the day. I do this in different ways depending on circumstances and opportunities but usually it means doing something that I enjoy, a small thing that holds life at arms’ length and permits some time to refocus.

Today it was a coffee and apricot health bar thing at a local café which was great because it was mid-afternoon, that quiet time between lunch and end of work hours, and there was very few people there. I sat, watched the world go by and enjoyed a 20 minute respite. I didn’t think about work, about the rest of the day…About anything really. I cleared my head and found presence, sort of purged the pent-up emotion or pressure that was blocking my progression through the day. It’s a process Ihave perfected over the years and I’ve found the benefits to be numerous. I feel better, return to the task or situation more engaged and feel more productive if at work and certainly find more value in the things I do outside of work. Because of this process.

I’m a believer in being truly present in my life, the things I do. That presence comes in various ways and the way it is deployed is situational however in each and every moment of my life I apply it, or at least I attempt to do so. Having it front-of-mind brings it to reality more often than not thinking about it and using this method I find greater enjoyment, value and perspective in my life. Whether I’m sitting on the couch watching GOT, the Walking Dead or some other show, listing to some favorite tunes, shooting guns, hiking in the bush, in a work meeting or enjoying my life together with my partner I apply presence and it returns life-value, greater satisfaction and results; No matter what I’m doing I always focus hard on that thing.

What do you do to centre yourself, to snap you back to attention and focus? Is there a process you prefer and which gives you greater results? Meditation, yoga, head outside with shoes and socks off and do some grounding? I’d be interested to know how you keep yourself on track and ** 100 percent within** the moments of your life.

Meditation can be a good one for me in an emergency case. But long-term finding presence, I find it has to do with the current situation of my life as a whole. If I feel stuck and not in control over my decisions, I find myself hoping to be in a different circumstance, therefore accepting presence becomes harder. But if I have a goal, or at least a feeling that I'm going somewhere - doesn't necessarily mean I'd know where exactly -, progressing, I find it's easier to be in the presence, too.

I think many feel the same way as you to be honest, I know I've been there myself, many times. I think that's why goals are so important for a person to have. A goal, and a solid reason why can make all the difference to a person's attitude which can leave them to a feeling of greater presence as you state.

Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it.

When things go of track it is still moments of life and can sometimes be a good thing when you look back later on.

I find that physical activity helps me so I would go for a walk or head to the gym. With some music, it can become a great therapy and clear the mind to get back to the task at hand. Hope it gets bettet mate!

That's a good strategy. Music helps me a lot. It's all good, just had a heavy workload today and had to rely on others to do the right thing. All worked out. Tuesdays a whole new day! 😉

That's what I call modern meditation. That which doesn't need a quiet place, a yoga mat or relaxing music and which is not attached to anything for it to be triggered. I practiced yoga for about 5 years, have had some serious meditation experiences also but I haven't mastered "that thing", I don't even know how to call it, outside of my meditation sessions or yoga practices. After I read the books of Nisargadatta Maharaj I kinda got the trick and realized that actually I don't need anything for it to happen. I am happy to read such posts and to find more and more people that are eager to go beyond the matrix and to be fully aware of themselves.
Being, with no labels attached to it, might become the new wealth sooner than we think.

I like what you said about modern meditation...I think having the ability to re-set, re-centre or just clarify ones thoughts is important and whether it's at the work desk, on a short walk or or over a coffee the value is the same. It's a skill I have developed and that has worked very well for me. Not always of course, but mostly.
