Band

You wouldn’t think that being in a band would teach you anything about life. But it does. The most important thing you learn from being in a band is to learn your part. If everyone knows their part, everything goes a lot smoother. It’s the job of the leader to assign the correct personnel to the correct job.

Give each member of the band a part that will challenge them, yet, will be within their ability.

Part of doing your part is showing up on time. Being prepared. Having the proper equipment. It’s all part of being in the band. Bands, as opposed to sports, involve males and females and working together. Band involves working with folks from many generations. The best person for the job is whomever is best for the job.

You need leaders in a band. Some quiet and some vocal. Some lead with their instrument.

So being in a band prepares a person for the workforce. It prepares a person for life. It teaches you to encourage your co-workers. To give them a pat on the back when they do something well. To encourage them when they need encouragement.

So, band is a good thing. Band creates community. Band creates good citizens.

Band is a lot like life.

Sort:

I was in band for seven years in high school. I wasn't anywhere near the best in my section, but some of the best memories I have are from those times. It wasn't the most popular thing to do back then and even now I still get made fun of a little when people come across the old photos. It really was a great experience though. I occasionally find myself missing it.

It sounds like a person can learn a lot from being in a band. I never really thought of it that way but I suppose it's like that for a lot of team activities and projects. The co-ed point is a good one though, it a difference between sports and band that I never thought of.
