Reupholstering an IKEA sofa / IKEA

Last week I was busy reupholstering an IKEA sofa in our living room. My partner found it on eBay and bought it secondhand just after our daughter came to home ... we had too less energy to judge it thoroughly during the busy days with a new born. It was a bit dirty from the beginning and the white canvas cover absorbed dirt, bread crumbles, baby milk, mushed food and everything. I wanted to make a new cover for long time.

It was time to do it! It's summer holidays ;) It was the biggest object I sew in my life. I used 6.3m of fabric with 1.5m width. Although covers are 3D objects sewing itself wasn't difficult as most of the lines were straight. Just they were big especially the one for the base!

(I wanted to take a @neumannsalva style photo that makes readers smile but seems I need more practice ...)

I used original cover like patterns. Since my budget was limited, I carefully made a strategy to make use of the fabric as much as I can and reused materials from the former covers such as zippers.

Size wise it was the maximum size my home use sewing machine can handle while my sewing machine was strong enough to sew three layers of thick fabric, which I had doubt before I start sewing the covers. Great job & thank you my Singer sewing machine! I wish you can take rest ;)

A 500m thread roll became empty. I used other a gray one to stitch outside so I think used more than 500 m of thread.

By the way, talking about IKEA sofa, covers are sold separately. Unfortunately I couldn't find ours. The production of the sofa can be over.

A set of covers for similar sofas costs around $170 up to materials, number of cushions etc. I'm satisfied with the result and happy to finish small part neatly. Also it was interesting to see effective IKEA design and guess the manufacturing process, why the sofa and covers were designed so. But seeing it as a paid work it doesn't make sense at all. I wonder how does IKEA make it within $170. In addition to production cost itself, transportation, storage, the company's back office cost etc are included. And also VAT is quite expensive in Europe. 19% in Germany. I found a tag says it's made in Romania.

While I was cutting and sewing the fabric, I noticed that a lot of dust in our living room. In the end I had some strange feeling in my throat. My sewing machine didn't feel good sometimes. I had to clean inside 2-3 times. I wish no one sacrifices his/her health and is exploited to produce cheap furnitures :(

So although I had a difficult feeling, I'm happy to finish the cover and my family is also happy about the sofa.

great job on this sofa .. that is a great brand too

Thank you rebeccabe! It's a new brand, IKEAkipponn ;)

That's awesome, @akipponn, on four levels :
I love IKEA but have only been twice. The second time I was pregnant with my eldest and the next day I went into early labour... I think I walked too much :D
I admire you for undertaking such a big and professional project.
I love your a-la-@neumannsalva photo - it worked : it did make me smile.
I really love that cat cushion on the sofa. Did you make it ?

Yes working conditions can be really bad : eyesight problems, back problems, let alone pay, all add up eventually ...

Thank you cryptocariad. Talking about IKEA, we have few products from IKEA and I like some design but I've never been there ;) It's mainly because we don't have a car. It takes quite long to visit IKEA with public transportation and even we arrive we cannot bring back much ...

And I'm happy that my selfie made you smile. That's a big success :)

About the cat cushion, the pattern is on Ravelry. I made it as my travel pillow but was a bit smaller than I thought. Now it becomes my daughter's friend.

I love that cat pillow!! Wish I could knit!! :)

Thank you for the info re the cat pillow @akipponn :D

Upholstering a sofa is a really big job! I commend you for taking on such a project and for finding ways to cut the cost. It’s always nice adding a fresh new look to things!

Nice @neumannsalva style photo! You did make me smile! 😄

Thank you needleworkmonday! The tag motivate me to try something new to share the experience within the community. And I'm happy to hear that I made another smile :D

Wow, an amazing piece of work! I'm so impressed with your careful use of fabric, and the bravery of your Singer sewing machine! I think your @neumannsalva picture has a touch of the Samurai ...
Your comments about the production of IKEA covers are interesting - how can it be done without compromising someone's health? Perhaps this is a potential campaign for #needleworkmonday?
Personally, I dislike IKEA, so much old tat and customers are overwhelmed by the environment and the products on display. The first time I visited, I kept thinking "it's only £1 or £2" and putting things in the trolley. When I came to the checkout, I had £106 of things that were only £1 each. Now I see that whole families are going to IKEA for a day out.

Well done to upcycle the sofa and make new covers :)

You are right. Now I see me a Samurai in the photo :D

Talking about the poor production environment, I wanted to join the course "Who made my clothes"
https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/who-made-my-clothes
Unfortunately I was too busy to follow the course ... I'm happy to discuss about this topic in #needleworkmonday community. I sew my and my daughter's clothes as much as I can as I don't want to invest money on clothes based on others' sacrifice especially that of small kids. Of course I cannot be perfect but at least I can try.

I like some of IKEA designs. For example the way they designed the sofa separately cushions and covers. It was easy to repair. This is good. But I don't like too cheaply produced products especially those don't last so long for many reasons.

Your covers look really professionally made, I wouldn't know the difference between the original ones and yours, well done! It's really cool that you can renew the look of your furniture.

I am actually looking to reupholster a couch at home and after contacting a few workshops I realized that it's quite an expensive process, it almost makes more sense buying a new couch...

Thank you vliet. I'm happy to hear so :) And yes, upholstering costs as much as buying a new one. It's difficult. I'm not good at replacing things with a new one ...

This really is a huge whale like project! Congrats on completing it! I was also thinking to change the covers of my sofa but it won't be as professionally made as yours. Your selfie is funny haha.

Ja, it was a whale exactly! You can make it. Good thing is that most of the lines are straight. Just you need time and tolerance ... And I'm happy to hear you laughing :D

I also use IKEA products. They are well-designed.

Yes, some of them are really well designed. On the other hand I feel sad to see some of them don't last so long or extremely underpriced ... It's difficult ...

Nice job @akipponn! You are a brave soul to endeavor such a project, but you are suck a skilled seamstress that I bet it will look better than new!!! Happy #NeedleworkMonday to you, my dear!

Thank you crystalize. I'm happy to hear so :) Happy #needleworkmonday too!

wow !!!! this is a grandiose project !!!! I'm very impressed with your work: the result is gorgeous! I really like the pillows on your couch and funny cat :) you made me smile a photo in style @neumannsalva :)))))

Thank you tali72! I'm happy to hear that my photo made you smile. The cat pattern is available on Raverly:
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jingga-the-orange-tabby-cat

I was quite sure especially knitters/crocheters like cat items :D I want to make another one with funnier color in this winter.

Thank you! I never knitted such cats. but what did you put inside?
