Picnic Day with Students

Picnic Day!

Yesterday, students had a 'picnic' (very loosely defined), and so I had to go to Innovation city in Naju. Innovation City is a kind of Government-built city, with the intention of having people moving from more densely populated areas (Seoul, Incheon, Busan) to these new cities. So, I got up early and rode my bike to Innovation city to meet students. I arrived there early 8:20 am I left by 7:40, getting good at my time and I found a new way to Innovation City that is much more convenient. Woot!

Anyways, I got there early, settled into a nearby cafe to have a coffee before everything starts at 9 am. Left the cafe to meet the other teachers that were arriving and we were off to start the 'picnic.'

How this picnic worked

It wasn't really a picnic in any form of what you would think. It was more like an exercise day for students. We came to an indoor soccer field, and students started to play soccer or throw tennis balls and hit them. So here are a few shots of the inside and my students playing around. I tried playing some football as well but my shoes are not suitable for sports, I should have packed my Chucks with me to get into it with them.

Shots like this I wish I had slow-motion capture again.

After horsing around for a while, the soccer coach came out, and things got serious. Students were quiet and alert. I wish they would pay attention to my class like they pay attention to football but oh well, that is how it goes I guess. lol

They did some stretching before they got into a game, I joined in with them on this part. I can do stretching and core exercises while showing them one up as well. lol With middle school boys it is important to assert your dominance early, else they will eat you alive. lol just kidding... kinda

They also had a small weight training gym on the same floor where students were playing. I saw some of them in there, so I went to check it out. All they had was a leg press and a rack, along with ropes to climb. I climbed up the ropes to the ceiling, maxed out the leg press and did my 80kg squats. Students were pretty impressed with that, and I feel honestly good about it. However, a student tried to do a 20kg overhead press, and I went straight down. I about ran in there cause the wall is a window with the bottom half frosted. So, I couldn't see what happened. He was safe though, at least.

They also did body measurements to find out BMI and fat percentage. I wasn't sure about my height so I took a guess and went a little lower than I think. I ended up having an excellent score though, and it surprised the hell out of me. I will get more into that next week though, as I am almost done with my exercise program.

Food part of the 'picnic'

So, as far as food for the picnic, there wasn't any. I know, I am as confused as you are reader. I guess we went over time and couldn't have a meal together. So, we were on our own for food. I guess it isn't all bad, at least I get to control what I eat, and I ate with a friend, so it was all good.

Ride to the Gym

Soooo, getting to the picnic was well a picnic, getting to my gym afterward was no walk in the park (couldn't resist). I use Kakaomaps these days, it is an app that is exclusive to Korea but I am out in the countryside, and I don't think it had the proper updates to send me on the right course that day. It tried sending me straight through a field, after all.

This is the true countryside

Around this field, it tried sending me straight through to a rode by the stream, when I had to go around...

Please, someone, explain why there is this European like renaissance era looking building that is supposed to be a bathroom? I have seen some weird things in Korea, but this is pretty out their and out of place.

Alright, that was yesterday and today is sports day. So, I need to get downstairs and cheer on my students!!

Is the purpose of the cities realized?

There is truth in some of your jokes there. Jokes are half meant any way lol! However, that European toilet though. I wonder whether was a bet on that or what was the idea behind it.

When I was tutoring online we were using KakaoTalk but I find Skype more effective. At least from my experience but I haven't that much use of KakaoTalk anyway.

I believe they are big on football than baseball, no? My students before don't talk much about baseball.

Yeah, the biggest one of these "innovation" cities is Sejong City. Businesses move there and then the people follow. It has been working out well so far. It is suppose to reduce the crowding in Seoul.

I have no idea why the toilets were like that. I should have went in to see if they were Western style, imagine the irony lol

Yeah, football is surely big here but each province has its own baseball team that play off each year. Those games are fun to watch!

Are they serious with sports as well? Every Korean I know seems familiar with football no matter what the age. I am guessing it is like part of their culture.
