I have long feared that something like this could happen to Gab. It was presented as a free speech alternative that was open to ALL. However, left-wingers would not compete with right-wingers on a level playing field, thus would not join Gab. This eventually meant that Gab became something like a far-right echo chamber; even if providing a superior user experience to what Twitter could provide, it was doomed to become a target and a scapegoat. But when it started stealing users from mainstream networks, you knew something worse would happen.
I think civil conversation is not a competitive sport - I visited Gab for a short time and although most folks there were nice enough, there was a conspicuous component of - how does one say? - disagreeableness (from my liberal point of view). So I left. There are lots of things to talk about in life, and they don't all have to circle back to politics within three sentences. The folks who were enthusiastic users of Gab have reaped what their extremist compatriots have sown. Good riddance.

It is ironic how all those same major platforms sat back and did nothing when shooters posted on youtube and facebook but as soon as this whole purge went down they need to take out all the alternatives.
