What about some news.....
In Holland you have this newspaper which was (a long time ago) a bit the standard together with two or three other papers. During lunchbreak I visited their site to read a bit about the news and I was kind a surprised or disappointed about the news they seem to bring nowadays....
A article about the Australian premier where people found out about a photoshop fail regarding his shoes. Obviously his original shoes were to dirty to be on the picture so they photoshopt some new sneaker (two left ones) in the photo...
Are they serious, is this front page news?
A Dutch showbizz couple have marriage problems, big deal... although for them it is of course. But what do we have to do with it, it's a private matter isn't it? What's the value of this 'news' , who can tell me? :)
The point I want to make with this post is doublesided, one side: With the photoshop fail it seems that a lot of (international) press has something with it and write about it a lot while I think there are more urgent things to write about, for instance the problems with humanity in a lot of countries.
The other side: The media do think they have the right to write about almost anything, including private problems or situations of (famous) people, but do they? I don't think so, what people are forgetting way to simple is that behind that 'famous couple' lies a entire family with kids, parents etc... No one keeps the impact of this kind of media messages against those people while it can harm them for sure...
What will it do with their kids at school if other kids come to tell them "your parents are getting a divorce", pretty painfull isn't it...
With freedom of speech and press there are some situations, in my opinion, you can manage that in other ways... Something to do with morals, ethics etc...

Any business on the web is measuring its success by page views and clicks and time on site. Unfortunately, low-brow tat is what people want to read. They may say they want news, but they react to prurient tabloid material.
The BBC is heading the same way - amateur click-bait headlines and celebrity gossip. The old 'mission to inform' that drove classic news providers is long gone. One of the many reasons I want to get out of the TV industry.
That seems to be the case isn't it... But the question which rises is "are we ;) in the minority then?"
As persons of taste and refinement in an ever more K-Pop world? Hell yes!

Media has a lot of power, but sometimes I think they don’t act/think about the responsibilities that come along with that level of power.
And two people want to read how celebs are doing and i think most people would love to read about the bad period celebs are living in at the moment of reading. So demand supply -> the media will write about it

I do think you are right with the demand/supply thing....
My wife and I often find ourselves looking at each other during the evening news and saying it must have been a slow news day. Some of the stuff that they cover is just ridiculous and not newsworthy at all. It is pretty sad.
Yep, and that is true..... I was surprised about the amount of news stations on the television when we were in the states. There is so many of them. Here in Holland you have a couple, but far from as many as n the States... (ok, we are a bit smaller but then still haha)
There are a ton and they all have their own agenda. It is pretty sad. I typically just read or listen to the BBC when I am looking for real news. Though I would imagine people in the UK have their own opinions on the BBC :P
